The rails were not as prominent in the upturn al though Frisco common established another new high record. The best gains were recorded in the motors, equipments, steels, elec trical manufacturing and merchan dise issues, particularly by shares of companies which recently have been reporting large earnings. Coppers and oils lagged behind the rest of the list. Included in the list us 1925 highs were such widely diver sified issues at Underwood Type writer, Julius Kayser preferred. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 16.—The advance on the Stock Exchange in today's two hour session Nook in an increasing number of individual issues and was featured by many new high prices. The industrials and public utilities were the leaders. Among the former shares of the specialty class were prominent. The active industrials of the type of U. S. Steel, American Can, Baldwin Locomotive, Mack Trucks and the electrical equipments were in dem*ul and encouraged buying ope rations in other quarters. Crucible Steel had the largest rise of any member of that group. Shares of lhe Southern companies—Gulf States and Sloss Sheffield—went higher. Buying of the latter from 83 ) 2 to 86 has been founded upon the indications of a better tone in the pig iron market. United States Steel common, above 117, was up over 2 points from the low of the week. Westinghouse Electric was bought on talk of favorable earnings. The stock at one time was up over 2 points. Allis-Chalmers went along, and General Electric was higher. Anaconda, above 38; Kennecott well abov<FJ>o, and American Smelt ing, above 97, were the features in the copper and smelting section. There was again talk of something more being distributed on American Smelting. The rise in Baldwin Locomotive from 114 to nearly 116 was set down chiefly to short covering. American Locomotive rose a point, and so did American Car and Foundry. Markets at a Glance NEW YORK.—Stocks firm; public utilities lead advance. BY GKORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW bonds went on at a more moderate pace today. With attention diverted from investment to speculative issues and especially the low-priced rails. The feature was Green Bay and West ern Income debenture “B” bonds which had a spectacular advance on the published report that the road was to be taken over by the Burlington. They advanced 2(4 points to 17% to 19 where a new high record for the last six years was made. At the same time there was buying of Ann Arbor 4s, but the gains were much smaller. New Haven Sixes Up. Other railroad issues in demand in cluded the,New Haven convertible 6s, which got above 91: Wheeling and Lake Erie 4V 2 s and Western Maryland 4s, the last two on merger reports. St. Louls-SanFrancisco incomes sold at practically their record high, and further covering went on in the St. Paul bonds. The high-grade investment issues were firm, but little changed in price. In the foreign group the recovery in French obligations was maintained, but went little further. The weekly statement of the Federal Reserve member banks showing an increase of $35,000,000 in holdings of secuirties other than United States obligations explained in part the recent strength in bonds. St. Paul Issues Strong. YORK, May 16 <(/P)l.—Specu lative railroad issues wore the centers of trade interest in today's early bond dealings. Strong features included the St. Paul issues, Norfolk and Western 4s and New York, West Chester and Boston 4 ! 2 s. Oil. and public utility bonds made moderate progress. A $5,543,000 7 per cent bond issue of the Province of Oordoh. Argentine, has been purchased by local bankers and will he offered next week. WHEAT SELLS OFF ' IN WEEK’S TRADING: Prospects of 20,000,000-; Bushel Crop Increase Sends Prices Downward. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, May 16.—Prospects that the 1925 domestic yield of Winter wheat will lie about 20,000.000 bushels in excess of recent unofficial figures have done much to bring about a sharp setback in wheat prices this week, excepting, however, wheat available for delivery this month. Compared with a week ago, the wheat market this morning showed declines ranging from 4 cents to 6Vi cents for July and September, with May vir tually unchanged. Corn was cent lo 2% cents down, oats % to 1 cent off. and provisions at losses ranging from 17 cents to 60 cents. I'. S. Report Is Surprise. The Government crop report, al though pointing to a much smaller production of Winter wheat than was harvested last year, came as a sur prise on account of indicating a total yield <>f far greater volume than the majority of traders had looked for. Temporarily, the price of May wheat was involved in the consequent down ward plunge of the market, especially as the United States visible supply figures which came later failed to show as much of a decrease as had been expected. Another depressing factor was uneasiness over a report by the ■Secretary of Agriculture touch ing recent charges of market manipu lation. Rally in Wheat on Hand, Kxport business, in which one Chi cago firm was alone credited with having shared to the amount of 1,000,- 000 bushels in 48 hours. led to a sub sequent decided rally in quotations for wheat already on hand, as distin guished from wheat yet in the fields. Besides, a big falling off in shipments from Argentina was announced and it was estimated that the world carry over of wheat July 1 would be the smallest on record. Corn prices were sensitive to weath er changes likely to affect planting and growth, and were also affected by slowness of cash demand. Oats felt the weight of continued big stocks. Provisions followed the downward course of the hog market. TODAY'S GRAIN PRICES. CHICAGO, May 16 OP).—Rainy weather brought about an early downturn of wheat prices today. The moisture extended over a good sized portion of the wheat belt, and With prevailing cool temperatures gave en couragement for a better crop outlook, especially as semi-drought conditions of late through important sections have been causing complaints of spindly growth and shortened stems. Ixnver quotations at Liverpool today than were looked for tended also to weaken values here. Chicago opening prices % to IV4 lower. May, 167 Vi and July, 150% to 151, were followed by a slight further setback and then something of a rally. Unfavorable conditions for corn planting, together with a rise in hog values, made the corn market rela tively firm. After opening at Vs to 1 off, July, 114% to 114 Vi, the corn market scored moderate gains all around. Oats took their cue from wheat j rather than corn. Starting at % to % lower, July, 44%. the oats market held near to the initial range. Provisions were responsive to strength of corn and hogs. WHEAT— Open. High. Low. Close. We are passing through a temporary seasonal trade reaction, and for the time being general busi ness is not as active as it was in March and early April. “Hence the rise in bonds to new high levels and the three-quarters re covery in stocks cannot be attributed to trade changes. “Our present capacity to absorb new securities, including municipals and foreign issues, is probably about $525- 000,000 per month, whereas these new issues since January have been aver aging about $450,000,000 per month ” Trading on Local Board.
