America's barefoot boy is suffering In an educational wav today from his environment on the farms of the Na tion. He is getting Teas education to day than any other group, of children. Including his sister, who does not work ort the farm, according to the Bureau of Education. Profitable employment, the bureau has determined, has had a detrimental effect on high School attendance by farm boys in many rural communities, while opportunities for attending rural high schools for boys have been limit ed. The barefoot boy of other days who received the rudiments of the three R's under the teaching of a stern taskmaster, who imparted her knowledge with the aid of a willow whip, is being neglected. Farm girls received a better educa tion than farm boys because the farm boy is economically useful at home. His labor is worth something, and the farmer has found little relationship between high school training and oc cupational sucoesp. On the other hand, the labor of girls on the farm is not so valuable, while the limitations of cus tom forbid girls working at outdoor farm tasks. The result has been (hat they attend high school in large num bers. While riding on a passenger train from Manchester, England, recently, Ambrose Welfare saw a boy in a canal, left the train at the next sta tion, ran back, dived and rescued the lad, who then was unconscious. It bounds back just twice as far! ” Measuring the spring in each pair of heels DOWN swings the metal hammer of this testing machine—strikes an ordinary rubber heel and bounces back. The distance that it bounds back is measured automatically. Then an O’Sullivan Heel is put in the machine. The hammer swings down again . . . strikes . . . and bounds back just twice as far! Rubber as resilient as this is not only springy— it’s so tough and fine grained that it will also wear. And those two things—springiness and wear—are what you want when you buy rubber heels. t You can’t see O’SULLIVAN quality, f any more than you can see quality I _ in finely-tempered v steel; but it’s I o'"* there, guaranteed by the name, and \ v (yp it costs no more than unsatisfactory \ /"Ik substitutes. That’s why it pays to ask Exaggeration ♦ Punktown boosters, in their ardor, sometimes knock the truth askew, and this sort of thing comes harder on the town than knocks would do. I have evermore insisted that no falsehoods be cxprest; I have wotted, 1 have wisted. that the truth is always best. Punktown’s merits are so striking she is sure to gain renown; let t4ic pikers do their piking in some less deserving town. Came a stranger to our city, and his given name was James, and his story roused the pity of all dele gates and dames. He had lost his costly dwelling in a distant, wind swept clime, where tornadoes come up yelling, pulling stunts which are a crime. “Now I wish to dwell for ever,” he remarked, with falling tear, “where no cyclones come to sever all the ties a man holds dear. Where a man won’t see his stables blown away in storm and wrack; where the wind won't blow the gables from the north end of his shack.” And the boosters cried, "Oh, stranger, if in Punktown you abide, you will never be in danger, here no cyclones are sup plied. Only balmy breezes fan us in this calm, sequestered vale, and no tempest ever ran us; we have never seen a gale.” So the stranger bought a shanty just beyond the public square, and he settled with his auntie in a calm contentment there. And he just was nicely settled when a windstorm came along; it was rude and highly mettled, it was truculent and strong. And it tore his shack to slivers, and it blew away his hat, and he's using ink in rivers, telling all the world of that. (Copyright). WALT MASON.
