COU NCILLAUNCHED
Farm Bureau Federation
Head Tells of Plans for
l Advisory Body.

CHICAGO, May 2S.—O. E. Bradfute,
President of the American Farm
Bureau Federation, made public yes
terday the first step in the proposed
organization of a national advisory
council to act as an advisory body
and lend permanence to the Grain
Marketing Co.
Mr. Bradfute explained the plan to
a group of Farm Bureau, grain mar
keting and business men whom he
called into a private conference here
today. The conference was a result,
he said, of meetings held in Washing
ton and elsewhere interested in co
operative marketing and "concerned
with the rehabilitation of agriculture
from a nation's standpoint.”
"This national advisory council may
supplement,” Mr. Bradfute's state
ment said, "what has already been
done to the end of permanently es
tablishing the Grain Marketing Co.
as a sound, co-operative business
agency, operating In accordance with
the best hanking and commercial
practices, for marketing the grain
crops at the lowest possible cost to
consumers.
"This national advisory council can
furnish the invaluable assistance of
prominent public men interested only
in the farm movement; of recognized
transportation experts; of nationally
known bankers with a thorough
knowledge of the financing of grain
crops; of agricultural economists who
have made a life study of the co
operative movement; of prominent
representatives of the milling indus
try and national consumers' organi
zations; of grain merchants of high
standing and long experience; of edi
tors of farm publications, who have
exhaustively studied and followed the
grain movement in its practical
aspects; and, in addition to these,
prominent leaders of agricultural
pools, associations and other agencies
who have devoted all their energies
during recent years to the develop
ment of the co-operative movement
among farmers.”
Mr. Bradfute made public a list of
more than 20 men of national reputa
* tlon in various business pursuits
whom he had invited to become mem
bers of the council. The list was
headed by the name of former Gov.
Frank O. Bowden of Illinois and in
cluded the names of noted industrial,
co-operative marketing, publishing
and railroad leaders.
Mr. Bradfute's statement set at rest
reports that the private meeting was
called to consider a possible crisis
in the existence of the grain market
ing company.
Polish Leader to Visit U. S.
Dr. Alexander Skrzynozki. minister
for foreign affairs of Poland, has ac
cepted the invitation of Dr. Harry A.
Garfield, president of Williamstown
Institute of Politics, to attend the
sessions of the institute next July.
While in this country the Polish
minister will visit this city. New York
City, Boston, Chicago and possibly
other cities.

BALTIMORE, Mat 28. —Gasoline
engine! will be substituted for steam
locomotives on short lines of the Bal
timore and Ohio Railroad, according
to a petition tiled with the Virginia
State Corporation Commission. Daniel
Willard, president of the railroad, said
main lines would not be affected by the
change.
"We have planned to change the
type of locomotives on some of our
lines from steam to gasoline engines
for economic reasons,” Mr. Willard
said. "By the change we expect to
reduce our operating expenses and
give a better service.
"These changes will be made only
where they will he mtore economic
than present operation. To maintain
a high-grade service at the lowest
possible cost is the goal which we
are seeking.”
