HOOSIER WHS HOWLAND “FINDS” New Editor of Century Maga zine Gave Many Indiana Geniuses Their Start. By the Associated Praia. INDIANAPOLIS. October 14.—Be hind the genius of a group of Indiana writers who carried the Hoosler State to the fore In a generation In cotempo rary authorship there has been revealed the hand of Hewitt Hanson Howland, new editor of the Century magazine. Howland, as editor of the Bobbs-Mer rlll Publishing Company from 1900 to 1925, discovered and put before the country the first works of half a dozen Indianaians. Boyhood chum of Booth Tarklng ton and confidant of half a dozen other embryo literary artists, Howland’s sponsorship of many famous writers was not revealed until he was named to succeed Glenn Frank, who has be come president of Wisconsin Univer sity. Recognized Riley’s Genius Many of the incidents of boyhood which Tarkington has portrayed were from the every-day life of the compan ions. Tarkington. when not arrang ing bam loft shows, was Immersed in a book, Howland related, and through out his young manhood he read widely and well, building the background for his literary success. As the editor began bis Indianapolis association, James Whitcomb Riley was publishing his first volume of poems, a tiny pamphlet put out by an Indianapolis newspaper to which Riley was a contributor. Howland saw the genius of Riley and encouraged It. The relationship gave impetus to the young publishing house and started Riley on the road to fame. Gene Stratton Porter, with a know- ! ledge and love of nature, came from her Ltmberlost estate In northern Indiana to Howland with her first book, “The Song of the Cardinal." After a number of New York pub lishers refused Mary Roberts Rifine hart's first effort, “The Circular Stair case,” Howland accepted it, rushing to Pittsburgh overnight to get Mrs. Rhlnehart’s name to a contract. Whitlock's First Book Brand Whitlock as a Chicago news paper reporter and a student of poli tics paved the way for his first book. “The Thirteenth District.” Howland heard of It and went to Toledo, then Whitlock's home, read the manuscript, accepted and published the book. From Syracuse, N. Y. newspaper man came a manuscript filled with adventure, humor and characteriza tion. It was “The Puppet Crown.” in embryo, and heralded the arrival of a new writer —Harold McGrath. George Barr McCutcheon. a news paper man, brought from Lafavette, Ind., the manuscript for his first novel “Graustark.” “The writer must be a story teller; be must have a background of good reading and he must be willing to work long and hard. If he has these things he can succeed,” says Mr. How land. Scat for That. from Jude''. “It must be three years sinee I saw •ti last. I hardly knew jou—you ivo aged so!” “Really! Well, T wouldn't have 'mown you except for that dress!” RESORTS. ATI.ANTIC CITY. X.
