Sore I.W | j sonal habits by legislation. It is not so muck drink over here as smoking that is causing the home office worry. There is a law that compels tobacco shops to close every evening at 8. It was enacted during the war to save fuel, lights, etc., and release a certain amount of labor for employment more essential to the winning of the war than selling cigarettes and cigars. The law is still in force and there are no indications that it will be re pealed. But it is being evaded. Many to bacco shops upon closing their doors at night leave outside a slot machine which delivers cigarettes to any one THE EVEXING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1925. . who puts in a sixpence or a shilling. There are even penny machines that deliver a couple of “gaspers ' to those who insert a huge British copper. The machine doesn’t distinguish be tween a little boy’s coin and one put in by a grown man. And that is what Is worrying the home office. Children who wouldn’t be allowed to purchase cigarettes in shops are pro curing them from the machines. At the moment there is plenty of labor available for even such unessen tial industries as selling cigarettes. But there has been no suggestion to resume the pre-war habit of selling tobacco after dinner. Better Lighting to Improve Movies Urged by British Chemistry Expert By Science Service. LONDON, October 9. —Improvement of the "movies” by more scientific lighting of the theaters is urged be fore the Royal Photographic Society by Dr. K. C. D. Hickman of the de partment of chemistry at the Royal College of Science. This does not re quire more lights, but a better ar rangement of the illumination, he says. Chief of his recommendations, which are based on a study of the operation of the human eye, is that instead of surrounding the screen with black velvet or other dark hangings, this area should be fairly bright. The screen itself, however, should not re ceive any light other than that from the projector. The chief trouble with the lighting in the theaters is in contrast. “Only a small portion of the retina—the sensitive lining of the eye—is being used,” Dr. Hickman states, "while the outer portion is being kept dark; whereas anywhere else it would all be subject to the same lllumliiation. It is the field of view embraced by this outer region which determines the sen sitiveness of the eye. This increases the contrast and apparent brightness, giving the picture a fictitious strength •and brilliancy, and also it induces eye strain. A collateral effect Is the de struction of all sense of blackness, for it is impossible to appreciate as black 1 the shadows in scenes whose darkest ——— parts are brighter than the surround ings in the theater. The improvements suggested by Dr. Hickman consist in arranging the side lights so that they cannot shine on the screen. The region around the screen might be illuminated, he says, by making it of light color and projecting light onto it from an extra stereoptlcon in the booth, using a slide with a central opaque portion, so that none of it would go on the screen. Another method suggested would be to have the screen a short distance from the wall, with lights back of it. In this way, he asserts, the lighting of the theater would be more uniform and the effect would be more that of an actual scene viewed through a window. Auto Deaths Alarm Britain. From the Minneapolis Journal. Great Britain is alarmed because its motor fatalities have risen to the average of one p. day. Here in America we see a more alarming aver age checked up against many a State with only 2,000,000 or 3,000,000 popula tion, and we also are displeased. But there is this difference: Great Britain probably will really do something about it. 45
