10 M. P. CHURCH BODY . DISOWNS REPORT Had No Part in Recent Dry Survey, Committee An nounces. The Federal Council of Churches’ recent report on prphibition has brought about disavowal by the ex ecutive committee of the Methodist Protestant Church of any responsi bility for the document. In a statement issued last night the committee declared the articles by the federal council had been the occasion “for enemies of prohibition to boast that now at last even the churches themselves had been forced to admit that prohibition is a fail ure.’’ Denies Report Authorized. The statement further protested “against the assumption printed on the pamphlet that it has been pre pared and published under the au *• thority of the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America. “Whether the conclusions and state ments of that pamphlet are true or false,” if continued, "this committee does not feel it necessary to pass judgment. But eve desire to make this clear, that while the Methodist Prot estant Church has been in affiliation with the federal council from the be ginning, and is still making a small contribution to its annual budget, it has never authorized the council as a whole, or any officer, department or of that council, to speak authoritatively for it on any question of religion, morals or politics.” Asks Title Defined. The church’s attitude differed wide ly from statements made in the ar ticles, it said, and suggesffcd that the time has come for the churches to de termine the meaning to be included in the title of “Federated Churches of Christ in America.” "Protestantism,” it concluded, “is not inclined to an oligarchy, even of wise and pious men, and the present tendency of the council would seem to require a new definition of its title.” LIQUOR OWNER CONVICTED Will Appeal on Plea His Auto Was Searched Illegally. Morris Cohn, indicted a year ago for unlawful possession of liquor, was convicted yesterday by a jury before Justice Bailey in Criminal Division 1. It was the first liquor case tried at the present term of the District Su preme Court, and the second time Cohn was placed on trial for the of fense. a jury having disagreed in the case last Fall. Testimony introduced hy the Gov ernment showed that Policeman Vic tor P. Kew of the Tenth Precinct, ar rested Cohn October 29, 1923, and seized 18 gallons of corn whisky. At torney Harry Whalen, representing the accused, objected that Cohn's car was unlawfully searched and the court indicated he would like to hear at length on this subject upon appli cation for a new trial. Cohn was re leased on bond to await sentence. MRS. HELEN LEE EXPIRES. Former Resident of Washington Dies in New York. W. [ Between F and r - Turkish Men Must Give Street Car Seats to Women Under Company Rule By the Associated Press. CONSTANTINOPLE, October 15. Women's rights in Turkey do not yet include the ballot, but they do include reserved seats In trolley cars and ferry boats. The tired business women of the Occident may well envy the women of Turkey for whom a cer tain number of places are reserved by regulations just announced by the transportation companies. Formerly red curtains inclosed the first two rows in the trolley cars and women were required to sit in the secluded section, called the “harem.” No man, except the conductor, was allowed on the harem side of the red SCOPES’ COUNSEL FILES ‘EXPLANATION’ OF APPEAL Says State’s Attorney Changed Time Limit From 30 to 60 Days on Bill of Exceptions. By the Associated Press. KNOXVILLE. Tetin.. October 13. — A copy of Dr. John Randolph Neal's answer to Attorney General Frank M. Thompson’s motion to quash the bill of exceptions filed in the State Supreme Court in the appeal of John T. Scopes, who was convicted of vio lating the anti-evolution act. was yes terday forwarded to Chief Justice Grafton Green of Lebanon. It is liossible that a decision will be handed down here Saturday by the Supreme Court. The answer was filed with the Supreme Court clerk by I)r. Neal. In it Dr. Neal states that Attorney General A. T. Stewart, prosecutor at Dayton in the Scopes‘trial had changed the .memorandum on the bill of ex ceptions from 30 t<> 60 days as the time in which the bill could be filed. Gen, Thompson had charged that the bill was not filed within 30 days and therefore was not within the time limitations set. Dr. Neal yesterday said that he was not making any charges agaipst Gen. Stewart, but merely “an explana tion.” ’ CITIZENS’ ADVICE INVITED. Fenning Tells Lions Club District Heads Welcome Aid. VIRGINIA METHODISTS VOTE TODAY ON UNITY No Debate Will Be Allowed as Op posing Sides Clash, With Oppo nents Apparently Stronger. Special Dispatch to The Star. RICHMOND. Va., October 14.—Fol lowing a two-hour discussion yester day the Virginia Methodist Confer ence adopted a resolution calling for a vote without debate at 11 o'clock today on the question of unifying the Northern and Southern Methodist Churches. Bishop Warren A. Candler of Georgia, presiding, counseled the del egates to moderation in their discus sion of the resolution, but the scene was extraordinary for Its excitement and confusion. Proponents of the unification plan favored letting down the bars to dis cussion, while the opponents argued that the grounds had been covered at previous meetings and nothing could be gained l>y discussion. The vote on the resolution stood 170 to 143. It gave no indication of the possible results at the final balloting, but there is said to be a strong ma jority against unification.
