12 LOVE OF ANIMALS IS ARSON DEFENSE Man Who Tried to Destroy Packing Plant Sent to Insane Asylum. Bv tile Associated Tress. ROCKFORD, 111., February 24. Frank Lilts, self-styled cowboy, who claimed his love for animals spurred his attempts to destroy a horse meat packing plant here, has been found guilty of arson and declared insane. Litts will be sent to the Chester Penitentiary for Criminal Insane as a result of a jury verdict returned lat< last night. The defendant vigorously fought the insanity defense of his counsel. Litts made numerous attempts to raze the Chappel Brothers plant, where horses are slaughtered for for eign consumption and for domestic use as animal food. One fire started last October resulted in damage of SBO,OOO. while others were extin guished with little damage. His plan to blow up the plant with dynamite on the night of December 3 led to his arrest. Surprised by a watchman while placing the explosive. Litts was shot. He was found the next day weak from loss of blood. He claimed he came to Rockford to destroy the plant after learning on a Montana ranch that animals were sent here for slaughter. I.itts’ claims of having been a cow body later were denied by authorities, w ho said lie was a miner and a mem ber of sevi ral industrial societies. During his stay in jail lie prepared an address to the jury defending his actions on biblical precepts. doing to California? You Will Want This ltook. By the Associated Press. LONDON, February 24.—While it is considered unlikely that many Eng lish people will emulate the example of Lady Fisher and her fellow abstinents from food, who have adopt ed a regimen of fruit juices and fast ing to heal bodily ills, the “cure,” as described by Lady Fisher, is attract ing much notice. From Trlng. In Hertfordshire, Lady Fisher announces that instead of "those appalling long course dinners," she is taking the fruit juice cure and ended her twenty-eighth day without eating by a three-mile walk yesterday. “A banquet could be spread before me without whetting my appetite.” she says. And she added that she would fast another month, if neces sary to overcome an attack of auto intoxication due to general debility. Forty other guests are at the old mansion in the Herts lliiis with Lady Fisher, who is the wife of Sir Warren Fisher of the British treasury. AH of them are living on grape and orange juices, lemon and apple waters and water in which vegetables have been boiled. The director of the nursing home where the treatment is being given holds the view that virtually every disease may be cured by it. Lady Fisher says that notwith standing the lack of food she is able to dunce with enjoyment every eve ning and walk two or three miles daily. Moreover, since undergoing the treatment, she finds her brain working better. Whether she appre ciates equally all the drinks prescribed is not clear from her statement, but those who have not been initiated into the regimen express doubt whether water in which onions have been boiled, which is part of the proscription, is taken with the same gusto as the grape, orange and lemon juices.
