COUNCIL APPROVES ! WOMEN ON JURIES Objection'to Using Renewal Fees for Signal Lights Voiced by Citizens. Amendment to the District code to make women eligible for jury duty in ihe District <>f Columbia was approved by the Citizens’ Advisory Council, meeting last night at the District Building. Although the amendment met with opposition from members of the council, a motion by George R. AV ales approving it was carried after Mr. Wales had explained that the pur pose of the bill is in complete accord with the nineteenth amendment and in line with similar privileges extend ed to women in a score of States. The \ote on the measure was 4 to 2. Mr. Wales will write u report for submis sion to the next meeting of the coun cil. The amendment was brought to I he attention of the council in a letter from Mrs. Jennie O. Berliner, a mem * her of the Women’s Bar Association of the District. Dr. George C. llavenner was ap pointed to investigate certain phases of the District traffic code and to voice the objections of the council on these matters. The council, although lr took no formal action, voiced its ob jection to the use of a fl-a-year fee for renewal of automobile permits for enlarging the traffic signal light sys tem. its position being that it would impose an additional burden on Dis iriet taxpayers. It also objected to the naming of New Jersey avenue as an arterial liigh wav, members declaring that since the director of traffic has jurisdiction over till streets one streel should not be now selected to become a highway. The council reaffirmed a previous stand in opposition to the arbitrary power of the traffic director to revoke driving permits without review, and declared drivers should be able to in voke a. review by any competent court having Jurisdiction In such matters. The council, already in favor of ex tension of parks if undertaken in such away its to impose no great additional burden on the taxpayers of the city, took no formal action on a request by the Congress Heights Citizens’ Asso ciation for the addition of $400,000 to ihe District budget for park purchase purposes.
