MEDICAL AIR GROUP FORMED FOR PILOTS Section Organized as Result of Civilian Rush for Flying Licenses. * Tli** rush for Fedearl licenses hy civilian aviators has brought about *h<' organization of a medical section •if ill" aeronautical division of (he De partment of Commerce for the exami nation <>f the applicants. Dr. L. H. Batter, a graduate of the Harvard Medical School, has been ap pointed to take charge of the service and is niganizing a corps of 150 physi cians throughout the country to ex amine the applicants. I’nder the air commerce act of every air pilot must be licensed by the Department of Commerce. The applications since the famous flights of Lindbergh, Chamberlin, Maitland and Byrd have swamped the depart- j ment. and temporary permits are now j being issued awaiting opportunity to examine the applicants more thor oughly. I>r. Bauer Back Front West. As the prospective pilots must take an examination to show they have clear vision, good hearing and no physical defect, only doctors with fly ing knowledge are being used in pass ing on their qualifications. The tests are not so stringent as those for Army and Navy flverg. Dr, Bauer has just returned from a five-week trip through the Western States, where he has succeeded in or ganizing the medical service for the Commerce Department’s air activities, tinder present plans it is hoped to have at least one doctor in each cen ter of aviation activity. Aviation medicine, according to Dr. Bauer, is making rapid strides. He commanded the Army aviation medi cal center in Texas ltefore his appoint ment to the Department of Commerce post by Secretary Hoover. England was the first to realize that doctors must specialize in treating and exam ining aviators, and since that time this country has taken up the work in both the Army and Navy. Dr. Bauer hopes to interest the class A medical schools of the country to introduce courses in aviation medi cine. In New England, for example, Harvard, Tufts and Yale doctors who are specialists in air medicine will eventually be in demand, he believes, pointing out that so far there are ahouti 2.000 applications for civilian pilots’ licenses on file in the Depart- j ment of Commerce, and the number is increasing materially. Perfect Vision Required. The principal defects found in appli cants for flying is poor vision and im pairment of the nervous condition. Not only do the examiners require perfect vision from the applicant for a pilot’s license, but also that he be a good judge of distance, and be accur ate. He must have what is called in air medicine nervous stability, being able to stand exposure and strain without affecting his normal function*?. The man who has suffered from a nervous breakdown or shell shock is usually a poor aviation risk. The British early in the war attempted to make pilots of infantry officers and others who had suffered strain at the front, with the result that their air casualties were far greater on the training fields at home than in battle. It was this condition that caused them to study the medical side of the flyer. For Army combat service the doc tors have found, the pilot must be well under 30 when he starts his training. Even in civilian flying the man over 30 is considered old. Because flying is so young there are no statistics as to how long a man can fly. With ; experience, and leading a life free from dissipation, it is believed that a pilot can last an indefinite number of years without undo physical strain. The requirements for civilian pilots are not as strict as those of the Army and Navy, save for those in transport work, which is the carying of passen gers, mail, etc. The test for these pilots is almost on a par with those of the services. Civilian pilots seldom fly in high I FRANC JEWELRY COMPANY, 627 7th St. II The Perfect Four j Absolutely perfect blue-white dia monds, so arranged in price to meet your income. L. H. BAUER. altitudes, while the service pilots do. I Considerable medical research has ! been made as to the effect of altitude , upon the flyer. So far the medical men have found that on going to high , altitudes the pilot has an increased heart action, becomes nervous and j cannot concentrate, so that he does not know exactly what lie is doing. Civilian flyers, however, seldom rise above 10.00 ft feet. In the case of Col. Charles A. Lindbergh his medical ex amination shows that he is perfect physically. The first medical advance in pick ing men for aviators was the whirling chair, introduced during the war pe riod. This device ’was used to test the prospective pilots' sense of equi librium and is still used in the Navy, although the Army has advanced from the whirling chair to other means of trying out its pilots. The Army method, which is also the one that will be used by the Depart ment of Commerce in testing civilian flyers, is more simple, and medical men who have studied air medicine assert, much truer in its results. By means of having the applicant stand one one foot, with eyes closed, a cer tain length of time, and walking a chalk line In a circle with eyes closed. This does away with expensive para phernalia that was considered ade quate during war time. Center Long Conducted. The Army has conducted such an j air medicine center since the war, first at Mitchel Field, Long Island, and now at Kelly Field, Texas. The Army also qualifies their doctors as flight surgeons, and they have to do their flying just as the men that they ex amine and pass upon. Os course, this will not be true of the civilian doctors who will examine civilian applicants for pilots’ licenses. Many who learned to fly but never bother to take out licenses have now applied. Pilots of passenger aircraft, however, first pass all tests before they are allowed to pilot planes for hire or are employed on any regular route. 2,000 QUARTS SEIZED.
