By far the best markets for Ameri can exports of radio apparatus, a trade field which is scarcely being touched by an industry too absorbed in getting radio into the millions of homes in this country as yet unequip ped. are Australia and New Zealand, according to experts in the United l states Department of Commerce. I Australia increased its American I radio purchases from $210,214 in 1923. when radio first began to enter the export trade, to $1,304,585 in 1928, and during the first half of this vea v the Australians have already taken 5759.520 worth of American radio sets and equipment. The latter half of the year is the best radio selling season, so that a big boom is anticipated in this trade. New Zealand, liking American as sembled sets better even than Aus tralia. which Imports mostly parts and accessories, increased its imports from $83,426 in 1923 to $627,222 in 1926, and for the first six months or 1927 have recorded imports from this country to the value of $297,409. ■ ■ Tubes Indicate Trouble. If a vacuum tube shows a ten dency to he variable in its brightness, without simultaneous control of the current bv the rheostat, the indica tions are that either there is a loose connection somewhere In the “A” cir cuit or the plates of the "A" battery are giving some trouble. Tt is more logical to assume that there is some thing wrong with the battery, and inspection doubtless will be needed bv the battery anyway.
