26 SECRETARY PLEADS 1 FOR PREPAREDNESS Davis Sees Possibility of An other War '‘Before Many Years.” The possibility of another war “be fore many years” and the need for experienced armies and adequate equipment to be ready for it were stressed by Secretary of Labor James | J. Davis in an address at a meeting of j tiie Military Order of the World War j at the La Fayette Hotel yesterday afternoon. It took a year of the World War for this country to become pre pared, the Secretary said. ! Admiral T. J. Cowie was installed as commander of the District of Columbia chapter of the order. Col. Fred B. Ryons was elected to succeed Maj. Rowan Lemley on the general staff, and the following new members were elected: Ensign Eugene P. Me- Crorken, Ensign Irving M. Day, Lieut. Howard W. Amili, Lieut. Herbert J Jacobi, Lieut. William J. Jacobi, Maj John Stuart Hunt and Lieut. William T. Williams. “There are war clouds on the horizon at the present time,” Secre tary Davis said, “and predictions are freely made that another war will j come before many years. It is uni- j versally admitted that the last war ! settled nothing. It brought no more good to the victors than to the van quished, and a condition of uneasiness has been apparent ever since.” Insisting that this country should keep out of European squabbles if it can, he pointed out that conditions might make it imperative for us to intervene, as in the last war. “The time has come to look reality ! in the face,” the Secretary said. “The ! world is not composed of angels: i: j is not made up of pacifists, nor of ■ men who are too proud to fight. On ’ the contrary it is made up of men j many of whom are only too proud of j an opportunity to fight, and so long | as it is made up of such. I say, let ; us be prepared to fight them if j necessary.” » • “Women must not think they are on any different footing from men; they must not be late for court or they will be fined just the same as men.” said Justice Horridge of London recently.
