CALMED TORRENTS AID FLOOD VICTIMS • , \ **- - - ;• - ; —■ l - * V River Waters Used to Erase *v 4 m . Traces of Disaster —Food .Is Scarce. By the Associated Press. WATERBURY, Yt., November 12. "Water, which like tire is *a good servant but a bad master, was docilely at work today for the very people it ruined last week in its rain-driven rush from the mountains. \. ~*, . 4 In this and other, villages .of the, "Winooski Valley, the heart of the Vermont flood district, the water systems were at last repaired, largely removing the threat of typhoid. Water, drawn from the streams that ravaged the villages, was being used to remove traces of the damage. Homes Are Scrubbed. Homes, shoveled out during the week, were being scrubbed with mop and brush. Streets where last week torrents ran 15 feet deep were being flushed from standpipes, and cloth ing, caked - with river mud during the inundation, was washed and hung to dry. In front of many farm homes, household goods still crowded the porches and lined the road, but they were gradually being cleaned and dried and moved back to their ac customed positions. There was heat in most of the houses and cooking was being ac complished somehow, though this was hampered by a peculiar action of'the farmers at the time of the flood. For some reason, possibly because they are costly articles, the kitchen stove was about the first thing to be saved when the flood began to threaten. A journey along the Winooski re veals to the' traveler scores of weighty kitchen stoves perched high in hill sides or rocky promontories above the' , homes they once adorned. Hysterical Strength. Declares Work Itself Has Little to Do With Out standing Success. is a genius crazy? By no means, says Dr. William T- Shepherd of the Washington So ciety for Philosophic Inquiry, who Is malting an intensive study of the characteristic traits common to men and women of extraordinary ability. There is, however, an almost in evitable nervous instability. Dr. Shepherd has found, which Is found in the great majority of persons who have reached high places in the arts and sciences. The great difficulty in studying the complexes of genius. Dr. Shepherd said, lies k in obtaining clinical specimens. The few persons in Washington who might be con sidered geniuses do not, lend them selves to that kind of analysis. He has confined his experiments to one organi zation composed of writers, most of whom, he believes, have some of the characteristics of genius- The true genius, he saya, combines with extreme nervnuspess’ high in ventive power and. extraordinary mental energy, and there always is a mysterious inner urge to creative ef forts. SOUTHEND ON SEA, England, November 12 i/F).— Winston Church ill, chancellor of the exchequer, hits back at H. G. Wells, the novelist, who. in a recent letter indorsed the Liberal candidate opposed to Lady Iveagh, the Conservative candidate, pn .ihevground of the warlike policy of the Conservative government. In a message to Lady Iveagh, in which the chancellor refers to Mr. Wells’ allegation that the govern ment was heading for war,.he says: "ft is wrong to make an. untrue statement like this, and indescribably mean to make an untrue statement for the paltry purpose of cadging votes.” MUSSOLINI MAY RELENT. *; ROME,, November 12 -* G4*).>—Pre mier Mussolini may grant amnesty to a number of political prisoners on the occasion of the Christmas fetes, says the Tribuna. In doing this, the newspaper adds, Mussolini will take account of the prisoners’ ages, con dition of health and the economlo sit uation' of their families, .as well'as their antecedents. ‘ The Fascist emblem, Lictor’e rods bound around an ase, \vill henceforth attain the national flag, the premier has decreed. Is a prod uct that falls considerably short of the product of a genius. The story of geniuses, says Dr. Shepherd; who is making this study for presentation at the annual meet ing of the National Association of Psychologists, seems to show that genius fundamentally is of one order and that the difference between great general and a groat musician is simply one of environment and train ing. Had these been reversed the work of tho men would have been re versed. WANTED IN FIVE CITIES. ‘ St. <Louis Prisoner Faces Charges in Baltimore and Western Centers. ST. LOUIS. November... 12 </P>.
