Mr. Sanford was l*or/> at Middle town, 11. L. August 5, 1865. After ; preparatory schooling in bis native j State and the Roxbury. Mass*., Latin | School, he entered Harvard University | receiving a bachelor's degree in _ 1890 i Following graduation, he did engineer ing work in the Lake Superior iron | coun’rv for several years. In 1837 Mr. Sanford joined the staff j *f ’he Engineering and Mining Journal, | New York City, as assistant editor. I In 1305 he was employed as hydrolo ! gist bv the United States Geological I Slavey, specializing in studies of I artesian waters of the Atlantic coastal j plain. After a brief interval as geolo | gist with the Florida East Coast Raii ! way, he rejoined the Geological Sur | vey in 1908 as assistant engineer. I When the Bureau of Mines was cre ated, Mr. Sanford was appointed its first editor, a position he held without interruption from 1910 until his death. Mr. Sanford was a member of the Geological Society of Washington, and the Washington Academy of Sciences, and was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Anspacher, who gave a series of lectures here the early part of this year under the auspices of the George Washington Memorial Associ ation, for the benefit of the memorial, will return in February to give an other series for the same cause. The lectures are to be given at the home of the president of th» association, Mrs. Henry F. Dimock, 1301 Six teenth street. His subjects will relate to the great, international philosophical dramatists, including “Rostrand. the Dramatist of Failure,” to be given February 2: ‘Suderman, the Dramatist of Strength.” on February 9; “Shaw, the Dramatist of Criticism,” on Febru ary 16; “Maeterlinck, the Dramatist of Mood.” February 23. The officers and members of the as sociation are concentrating upon aug menting the fund for the memorial, with a view to having it completed in time for dedication and use during the 1932 celebration of the 200th an niversary of the birth of George Washington. THREE SUSPECTS HELD IN SLAYING PROBE Arrested in Connection With Rob bery of Grocery Store Manager November 5. Three negro suspects are being held by police in connection with the fatal attack November 5 on Charles F. Waldron, manager of an A. & P. store at 100 P street, who was slugged by a pipe wielded by a negro, who tiien took i s' r, 9 from the cash register and escaped jin a closed car driven by another ! negro. Rewards totaling $1,300 have been ; offered for the apprehension of the j bandit. The suspects are lodged at precincts 1. 2 and 3. They will be ; brought before Mrs. Waldron, who witnessed the fatal wounding of her husband, for identification, upon her return tomorrow from Mount Airy, Va„ where she accompanied the bodv of her husband.
