ZONING PLEAS FAIL; CHANGES APPROVED Con mission Refuses to In crease Area Allowed for Business District. Tlu.leen applications for a new zon ing lor properties in various sections of the District were rejected today by the Zonin - Commission. These applications were mong the 17 considered bv the comm, slon at a public hearing Wed nesday The najority of the proposed changes which the commission denied sought to have r.'sidential areas soiled tor com mercial purposes. By its action the commission indicated that it intends to further circumscribe the encroachment of commercial developments in areas now ? ned for residential use. A re cent survey by Maj. vV E R Covell. senior Assistant Engineer Comniissicm er and esecutise officer of the commis sion. s'lowed that the District now has four times as much commercial proper ty as it needs. The four changes approved by the commission follow Rezone from residential A and A re united to residential B < estrictea square 2789. bounded on the north ty Sheridan street, on the south by Hittenhouse street, on the east by Thirteenth street ar.d on the west by Fourteenth street. Zone first commercial C area, 60-foot height, the unzoned parcels near the intersection of Georgia avenue and Colorado avenue on both sides of Georgia avenue and between the j boundaries of the first commercial dis- j trict. Rezone from residential A restricted \ to residential A semi-restricted, prop- i erty near Connecticut avenue. Kanawha Street. Nevada and Nebraska avenues, j Rezone from residential B area. 40- > foot height, to second commercial D area. fO-foot height, property facing ; New York avenue and West Virginia avenue near Fourteenth street north east. Important among the 13 petitions i denied was one proposing a commercial zoning for property on the east side | of Twentieth street between R and S streets. This application was vigor- j ously opposed at the hearing. Among the other applications denied j were two in which proposed large build- j lng are involved. One proposed a first j commercial D area for the first com mercial C property on the northwest comer of Fifteenth and M streets. 1 where it is planned to erect an eight- j atory office building The other would j have permitted an increase from 90 to 1 110 feet in the height area on the property on the south side of L street between Eighteenth street and Con necticut avenue, where Harry Wardman has planned to erect a large building HOSPITAL BUYS LAND. About 2 acres of ground immediately! to the north of Mount Alto V eterans j Hospital on Wisconsin avenue have been purchased by the Veterans' Bureau and i added to the reservation. Operations already have begun on a more direct and less precipitous drive way entrance to the hospital grounds through the newly acquired property, and a retaining wall is being built t long the Wisconsin avenue frontage of the old site.
