Radio and Cast Iron Pipe Give Fireworks. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 20.—1 t was an other day of extravagant speculation on the Stock Exchange. Prices were bid up with every appearance of reckless ness and to the accompaniment of a huge turnover. The most important, but not the most, spectacular. Incident was the rise In General Motors to a new high level of 173, the highest at which the $25 par shares have ever sold and so In ef fect the highest for all time. The ad vance was fairly orderly, the opening having been down a point at 167, but that Toss was soon canceled and the stock moved steadily ahead. Large blocks changed hands on the rise. Radio a Star Performer. Radio and United States Cast Iron Pipe were the star performers, how ever. Radio ran up above 154 from an initial price of 139 and compared to Monday’s closing of 137. Apparently this was a demonstration against the short Intelests. although it is hard to see why any but the most stubborn of bear operators should not have been eliminated long ago. Then there was United States Cast Iron Pipe. This Is the stock that soared over 28 points yesterday. The closing price then was 235, in itself a new high record. When it touched 250 today it was up 15 points more. There was talk of a “split up” or some other favorable development, but to believe that the movement was any thing more than wild speculation was a strain on credulity. Another high-priced favorite was Rossia Insurance, up 11 points at one time, likewise at a new record high Still another was A. M. Beyers There were many others but these will serve as samples. Independent Motors Bought. The independent motors, most of the utilities, and a few of the rails were actvlely bought. Os the motors the most prominent were Nash, Hudson. Hupp and the low-priced Graham- Paige. Collins and Alkman. the busi ness of which Is closely connected with the motor car trade. Jumped between 6 and 7 points. _ - • In the utility group North Ameri can reached a new 1928 top, and in the rails Texas and Pacific sold at the highest In the history of the road. There was a moderate response by Erie to the favorable February earnings' statement. New York Central met profit-taking early In the day, but rallied in the afternoon Interest in the action of United States Steel centered on the effect of the announcement that the du Ponts had disposed of their holdings in that company. Steel opened lower and dragged all the forenoon, but in the second half of the session recovered above the previous close. - - • CREDIT FOR GENOA. GENOA. Italy. March 20 UP).—Dillon.
