COOPER. President Capital, $1,000,000.00 FINANCIAL’. * "IBONOS FLUCTUATE IN MIXED MARKET £F ________ Price Changes Not Confined ot Any Group—Utilities Are Typical. * BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January 15. —Special conditions had most to do with the movements in bonds today. In the same type of issues there were those that advanced and others that de clined, depending on the conditions of supply and demand surrounding them. For instance, Atchison 4s and Union :L Pacific 4! is were strong, while Balti more & Ohio 4s, Northern Pacific 4s and Canadian Pacific 4s were heavy. In the public utilities DuQuesne Light 4' 2 s were higher, selling around 101. or nearly a point above Phila delphia Electric 4 1 ; >s. Philadelphia Co. 54s and Columbia Gas 5s moved in opposite directions for a while. Some of the United States Government is sues were stronger and some showed a sagging tendency. The fear of higher money affected all of the quality issues. Outside of the foreign convertibles, which were irregular, there was a strong market for several of the South Ameri cans. as the Uruguay 6s, Brazilian 6>2S and Bolivian 7s. United States Rubber 5s advanced nearly a point, selling at the highest prices in months. International Tele phone convertible 4 , I >s were active and strong. A new demand has developed for the Minneapolis andl St. Louis and the lowa Central bonds. Seaboard t Florida 6s rallied above 70. The bond houses that deal chiefly in high grade issues, which they supply to life insurance companies, savings banks, trustees and estates, complain of having difficulty in obtaining a suf ficient amount of these securities to satisfy their customers. There are several large orders in the market for railroad bonds and for tax-exempt issues. Those who have these orders are making slow progress in completing them. The testimony of all others who do a general bond business and who origi nate as well as distribute bonds is not satisfactory or encouraging, so far as I the future outlook is concerned. Sales ; men have been giving much of their time in the past six months to stocks, so it is almost impossible to get them interested in their former work of sell ing straight mortgage issues. They are always eager to canvass their terri tory. however, when a bond Issue of a convertible type or with warrants at tached is allotted to them. Today the Great Northern Railway is paying off all of its 6 per cent United States Government equipment trust certificates at 103. Os the many roads s. that financed their equipment purchases “ in 1920 with bonds, which for a time were held by the Government and later distributed to the public, comparatively few have anticipated payment. The latest maturity of these issues Is 1935. i> Washington Stock Exchange SALES. Riggs National Bank —2 at 570, 5 at 570. National Bank of Washington—3 at 312. Chevy Chase Dairy pfd.—lo at 107.
