ADVANCE IN STOCK 1 MARKET CONTINUES Steel Again Assumes Leader ship—Coppers and Util ities in Demand. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, February 25. —Despite a run-up in call money to 9 per cent — the highest since February 15—today’s stock market, under the leadership of U. S. Steel, gave a good account of it self. Steel was bought aggressively all day and the rest of the list was strong most of the time. When money was first advanced from j the renewal rate of 6V2 per cent to 7 and then to 8 there was a pause in ! operations for the rise, but no substan- | tial reaction. The turnover, while larger than on any day last week, was still of moder- j ate proportions. Steel made its best price in the last hour. Advance Rttme- I ly was strong toward the end. The ! market left off around its best. The | opening was higher all around. U. S. Steel was the leader, as it had 1 been on Thursday. The opening sale i was 30,000 shares at 185. up 3 ; points from the preceding close. From j this point it advanced without inter- | mediate reaction above 188, where it; was less than 5 points from its record j high. Then profit taking appeared j and the stork reacted some 3 points, j but was still well supported. Other Stocks Advance. Other stocks in demand included American Bosch Magneto and Kreuger and Toll. An exception to the general trend w'as American & Foreign Power. Open ing lower, it developed acute weakness. Below 115 it was off more than 10 points and had erased all of the ad vance of last week. The selling prob ably w'as nothing more than the nor mal realizing after the long upward movement and the announcement of the terms of the new' financing. Railroad stocks were quietly firm in the earlier trading, but came off some what later when the Industrials re acted.
