CANDLER DIES; ILL FOR TWO YEARS Former Coca-Cola Manufac turer’s Death Is Mourned in Atlanta. ______ t By the Associated Press. ATLANTA, Ga., March 13.—Atlanta today mourned Asa G. Candler, a former drug cle-k in a country phar macy, whose faith in a soft drink formula brought him millions in the manufacture of Coca-Cola. The 78- year-old capitalist civic leader and philanthropist died late yesterday at Wesley Memorial Hospital after an ill ness of more than two years. Mr. Candler’s rise is a story of the romance of American business: as the proprietor of an Atlanta drug store, more than 40 years ago. he purchased the formula for Coca-Cola for a report ed price of SSOO, and in 1919 sold his interest in the Coca-Cola Manufacturing Co. for $25,000,000. Advancing years caused him to re linquish active control of the business in 1911 in favor of his son. Charles Howard Candler, and Mr. Candler turn ed to real estate activities, civic enter prises and philanthropies. At one time he served as mayor of Atlanta. He was married, while still a phar macist. to Miss Lucy Howard of Atlanta, who died in 1919. Began With $2.50. Mr. Candler's path to success was not : without Its obstacles. He was 10 years ! old when the Civil War began. The I family farm was near the path of j desolation spread by Sherman's march I through Georgia, and when the war had ! ended the farm was stripped of slaves, ; stock and provisions. He did his share i of the work of reclaiming the land, at i the same time attending the public ; schools. This he supplemented by the I study of pharmacy, and when he was 21 went to Atlanta, Ga.. with a capital of $2.50. Going to work in a drug store, he remained until November, 1873. when his father died, and he returned to the i family farm to take charge of it. In addition to his gifts to charity, which aggregated several million dollars, Mr. Candler's life was characterized by numerous instances of practical altru ism—acts which in their inception ap peared like tossing away money for the benefit'of the public. During the money panic of 1907 he offered to purchase from business men property they wished to sell, not at panic prices, but at the peak prices preceding that period. As a result he paid out $1,100,000 in cash for Atlanta real estate without demand ing any sacrifice from the owners. When the World War cut off the Eu ropean cotton market and the price dropped to 6 cents a pound, Mr. Candler went to the rescue of the Southern cot ton growers, announcing his readiness to lend on cotton up to $30,000,000 on the basis of 6 cents a pound. After a large portion of the amount had been distributed he took off the limit and offered to lend as much as the South wished to borrow. Mr. Candler was bom December 30, 1851. on a farm near Villa Rica, Ga., the son of Samuel Charles and Martha Beall Candler. The family was of Irish descent, tracing to a William Candler of Callan Castle, Ireland.
