May 17. —Al! traces of the recent nervousness disappeared to day on the Curb Exchange, where prices rose buoyantly on increased volume. The aviation and utility stocks fur- : nishrd most of tho" excitement, with ! opening transactions in a number of ; cases for large blocks at substantially j higher prices. Later the gains were in- j creased. 4 j Fokker Aircraft. The most spectacular performer was j Fokker Aircraft, responding to the an- j nouncement that General Motors had j acquired a 40 per cent stock interest j in the company. The first sal<* was for 15.000 shares at an advance of 3% points to the highest price on record 1 and the strength was well maintained, i Bendix Aviation and the old Bendix Corporation stock also made new tops 1 and Western Air Express gained more than four points before midday. Urgent buying of the utilities, which were subjected to heavy selling at times during the week, carried many of them back over the ground lost and one or two into new high ground. Rumors that Electric Bond a Share would shortly go on the big board attracted greater investment buying and sent the price across 100 for the first time since the present shares were issued. The exact na ture of its holdings has never been dis closed. Other strong members in the power and light group were Electric Investors. Northeastern * Southeastern Power and American Ac Foreign Power warrants. United Gas Improvement kept up with the leaders in point of advance. Industrials Higher. May 17.—The General Motors Corporation yesterday an nounced its active participation in the aviation industry by the purchase of a block of 400,000 shares of common stock of the Fokker Aircraft Co. of America, representing a 40 per cent interest in that concern. This makes the third large automo bile company to enter the airplane field. Ford already has organized the Stout airplanes division, specializing in the manufacture of heavy tri-motored metal planes. The Packard Motor Car i Co. has been experimenting for months with a Diesel oil-burning airplane en gine, the first successful flight of which was announced this week. In consideration for the purchase of the Fokker stock, James A Talbot, chairman of the Fokker board, an nounced that General Motors has turn ed over to the Fokker company all of the capital stock of the Dayton-Wright company, the assets of which consist of McCook Field, in the heart of Dayton, Ohio, a large number of valuable pat ents having to do with the aviation in dustry and additional cash assets of substantially $6,500,000. Negotiations for the purchase were closed today after months of negotiation. Anthony H. G. Fokker, who with Mr. Talbot, Harris M. Hansue, president of th» company, and their associates, is believed to control 40 per cent of the Fokker stock, will continue with the company in charge of engineering and design. The present personnel will be continued in the operation of the Fokker ‘company, supplemented by additional personnel from the General Motors or ganization.
