COOPER. President Capital, $1,000,000.00 FTNANCIAE.’ SPECULATIVE BOND LIST IS IRREGULAR High-Grade Issues Sag Under Uncertainty in Credit Situation. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK. August 13.—Prices for speculative bonds swung back and forth today, reflecting irregular movements in stocks, with periods of proflt-taklng followed by further accumulation. The issues that reflect money con ditions primarily were lower, with the average of the domestic bond list be low all previous records since 1928 and about 4 l-i points below the higher average of last January. The two telephone convertible 4 1 ,* per cent bonds had the widest fluctua tions. American Telephone bonds first declined 2points, then rallied, de clined a second time and then sold at a substantial advance over Monday’s closing. International Telephone 4'is lost 4*2 points also before they recov ered. General Public Service 54s started 3Va points higher, but did not hold all of this gain. Atchison were a point lower. Philadelphia & Reading 6s, American International 5* is and American I. G. Chemical 5>/ 2 s were all higher with Missouri Pacific 5 1 -* and New Haven 6s off about a point. - The neglect of high-grade bonds by Investors and competition with money rates caused lower prices In them. These conditions also affected the junior is sues. bringing some of them down to the lowest of the year. For Instance. St. Paul gold ss. a bond that has been popular because of Its high return and the increasing earnings of the St. Paul road, dronped a point to 67’,. after selling for some weeks between 90 and 91. and as high as 94 this year. Erie refunding ss. another bond in this class, dropped Li point. Nearly all of the sugar producing company bonds were soft, with Cuban Dominican 7' 2 s declining 3La points to 61. They have been as low as 55 this year and as high as 98. The local trac tions were slightly lower. Utilities Power Light 5* 2 s gained I’2. 1 ’ 2 . A num ber of the straight debenture issues trusts In the outside market are show ing large declines, in spite of the fact that the earnings of these trusts on their stocks are phenomenal. Foreign Issues were quiet, with slight declines in the French government bonds and losses of 1 2 to a point In Brasilian and Peruvian descriptions. CRUDE OIL OUTPUT. TULSA. Okla.. Much of the cantaloupe and peach supplies were received in so advanced a stage of ripen ing thht dealers found it necessary to dispose of the supplies at decreased prices. Business in the fruit and vegetable market was not very brisk this morning, according to reports, and dealers feared they would be unable to move all re ceipts before the close of the day’s market. They reported business thus far this month much better than they had anticipated and much better than the corresponding month of most past years. Anne Arundel County, Md., growers supplied large quantities of cantaloupes, even heavier shipments coming from the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Canta loupes from the latter section were of a variety that made it possible for mer chants to carry them over until tomor row, if necessary, without resorting to cold storage plants. Fra it Prices. Prices, covering a wide range, were determined entirely upon size and con dition of the fruit, baskets of the Anne Arundel County fruit selling from 75 cents to $1 a basket. Crates of the Eastern Shore of Maryland stock were offered at various prices. Good quality peaches sold around $1 and $1.50 a bushel, some choice stock selling as high as $2.50. Some overripes were offered at almost any price buyers were willing to pay. Pears, product of California growers, sold around $4 a box. Rappahannock River watermelons reached the local market in fairly large quantities this morning, many of them being unloaded from motor boat* a* the Municipal Fish Market. There also were some melons received from North Carolina. Prices covered a wide range, choicest melons selling around 75 cents. Smallest of the receipts sold as low as a quarter. Sugar com continues in only fairly heavy receipts, and, considering the dry weather, dealers stated, the vegetable Is in very good condition. Best of the re ceipts this morning brought as much as $1.75 for five-dozen sacks. Some, not of the best quality but good, sold at slightly lower prices. Tomato re ceipts. not heavy enough to glut the market, were in fair demand at prices ranging from 50 cents for culls to $1.50 lor choicest stock. Lima beans, more plentiful, sold at $1.50 and $1.75 a bushel, while peas, not so plentiiul. mostly from Colorado! were quoted at $5 and 85.50 a crate of 45 pounds. Potatoes were more plentiful and cheaper, selling at. $1.50 and $1.75 a bushel, culls selling at $1.25 a bushel. A slight weakening of the egg market was reported this morning, the result, it Is stated, of receipts of eggs from the West. It is said that storage eggs have not yet been put on the market. They probably will be released as soon as prices advance a few cents. Increased receipts of poultry was re ported this morning. NEW YORK, August 13 —The un favorable developments at the confer ence In The Hague, together with the effects of the action of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York In advanc ing Its rediscount rate last week from 5 per cent to 6 per cent, sent the ma jority of European curries to lower levels In this market. Sterling sagged to $4.84 3 4 for cables, slightly below the accepted gold trans fer point, while the franc lost % point. Dutch guilders continued weak and marks lost a full point. Grave concern is being felt over the position of sterling. The gold reserves of the Bank of England are extremely low as a result of the re cently arrested drain of the metal from London to Paris. While it has been Intimated, according to London advices, that the British bank has no intention of advancing its rate this week, observers do not see how such a move can be avoided much longer in view of the action of the Federal Re serve Bank here and the persistent weakness in sterling. ■ ■■■ • ■■ ■ CHICAGO DAISY MARKET. METAL SITUATION DECLARED BETTER Non-Ferrous Group Benefits by Increased Uses in Industry. BT J. C. ROYLE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, August 13.—T0 the careful student the situation of the non-ferrous metals, even those sup posedly depressed, shows signs of Im provement. That was the conclusion of one of the country’s most up-to-date mining men today. Summarized, his conclusions are as follows: Copper consumers have been reas sured by the stability of the red metal at present prices, and are filling re quirements for coming months which are far heavier than In previous peace time years. Lead sales are high and the demand is not likely to shrink in the immediate future. This is improving the statisti cal position of the metal, which was threatened by burdensome stocks. The supply of zinc now being mined is strictly controlled. This curtailment has been made effective to a greater extent than in nearly any other line of endeavor by mutual agreement, and it is likely to prove eflicatlous in sustain ing prices. The Aluminum Corporation of Amer ica has all it can do to fill demand, and it is in adequate control of the situa tion. Aluminum output this year is expected to exceed that of 1927 by at least 30 per cent and that of 1928 by 8 or 10 per cent. This may not mean any change in prices and probably will not. Nickel production continues at a rec ord-breaking rate, and the demand Is progressing just as fast. This is due largely to the demand for alloy steels. The production of International Nickel, which controls 90 to 95 per cent of the world’s supply, will be in excess of 100,000,000 pounds this year. Tremendous stocks of tin have been piled up in various parts of the world, but consumption of that metal is grow ing at a pace which is assuming the F. B.
