W’ith the arrest yesterday of three youths In connection with an attempted burglary of a sports goods store In Georgetown, police expressed the belief that they may have a clue to the numb* of window-breaking episodes here recently. The arrested youths, who aay they are Philip Hamilton Furr, 22, of the 2300 block F street; Theodore Dion Dougherty. 23. of Cherrydale. Va. and Philip Kirkpatrick Horton, also 23, of the 300 block East Capitol street, are being held at the seventh precinct police station on a charge of investlga- According to Precinct Detective N. S. Hodklnson, the three youths admitted after their arrest that they attempted to gain entrance to the sports goods store of Jacob Shapiro at 3068 M street by breaking the glass In the front door. Police said they were frigtened away by the approach of a man who obtained the license number of the automobile In which the youths fled. It was the license tag that led to the arrest of the boys several hours later by Police man John Burke, who found the boys sitting in the parked automobile at Twenty-fourth and F streets. Headquarters Detectives J. A. Foley, Charles Warfield and C. P. Cox of the clothing squad questioned the youths at the seventh precinct for several hours. They were asked about a burglary earlier yesterday when a large win dow at Woodward & Lothrop's was smashed by a brick and a $1,200 silver fox fur coat stolen. Brazil Celebrates. PLOT AND SUICIDE LEAD TO ARRESTS Larkin's Death at Buffalo Followed by Inquiry in Extortion Charge. By the Associated Press. BUFFALO. N. Y., November 16.—An attractive young woman, giving the name of Katherine E. Palmer, and a youth named Gordon Lewis were being held by police here today on suspicion of connection with an alleged plot to extort money from Hubbard W. Lar kin, who killed himself this morning In a Are station where he had spent the night. Larkin. 28 years old, was a gTandson of John D. Larkin, founder of the Larkin Soap Co. No charges have been laid against the couple, and probably will not be until the woman's husband. Gerald Palmer, to whom she said she was married in Detroit, and another man known as Joseph Rudy, have been ar rested. The man known as Rudy cashed a SSOO check given him by Larkin, October 24. Complained to Police. Larkin, who was a grand-nephew by marriage of the late Elbert Hubbard, founder of the Roycrofters at East Aurora, complained at the detective bureau. Thursday, that last Tuesday five men came to his home in Eden, N. Y.. and demanded $5,000. They were all armed, he said. He told police they sought to extort the money from him ‘‘because he had been going with Katherine Palmer, wife of one of the men.”. They threatened to kill him if he did not pay, and he said he promised the money on Wednesday, but was unable to get' It without appealing to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Larkin, in Cali fornia. He said he gave the same gang a check for SSOO. October 24, made out "to Joseph Rudy.” Wanted to Defend Her. Larkin confessed to police he had become smitten with the Palmer girl, but said he did not know until later that she was married. He said he would have complained sooner, but he wanted to defend her. The young man had been on friendly terms with the firemen at the Seneca street station and had been spending the nights in the dormitory lately. They said he appeared worried yes terday, but he declined to tell them what was troubling him. This morn ing thev heard a muffled shot and found him near death under the blan kets on a cot, a bullet hole in his right temple. He died shortly afterward. HAVANA CELEBRATES. Feast of San Cristobal, Patron Saint, Observed. HAVANA, November 16 (JF). —Havana yesterday commemorated the feast of San Cristobal, its patron saint, whose name is a part of the full name of the Cuban capital, though the fact is not generally known. When Spanish colonists decided some 300 years ago to move the capital from Puerto Principe in Camaguey Province to its present site they named the new site "San Cristobal de la Habana.” De sire for brevity reduced it to Havana. Services were held in all cathedrals of Cuba and special masses celebrated at dawn in the tiny temple of old Ha vana that commemorates Christopher Columbus and the patron saint of the city. CRAFT IS ABANDONED. Hope of Saving Grounded Freight er Is Given Up. BUFFALO. N. Y., November 16 UP). — All hope of saving the freighter Briton, aground on a shoal off Point Abino. was abandoned yesterday and the crew of 27 men was taken off the ship by United States Coast Guardsmen. The Briton was reported at nightfall as settling fast and giving indications of breaking up under the pounding of high waves. Before the ship was abandoned, four tugs made a final attempt to pull her off the rocks. A lighter was also taken up, but owing to the dangerous position of the Briton no attempt was made to salvage her cargo of flax and wheat valued at $225,000.
