RUM AGENTS FACE ATTACKJN TRIAL, Defense Attorneys Plan As sault on Conduct of Fed . • eral Men in Idaho. Bx the Associated Press. COEUR D'ALENE. Idaho, December . M.-—An attack by the defense upon the conduct, of Federal prohibition agents, who spent nearly a year in Northern Idaho collecting evidence that resulted In the arrest of about 200 persons on liquor charges, was In pros peet today at the trial of 28 Individuals accused of conspiracy to violate the dry law. Attorneys for the defense announced that they would make "sensational dis closures" and would require about two weeks to present evidence in behalf of the accused persons, who include city officials and business men of Mullan, Idaho. Their motion for a directed ver dict of acquittal was denied Saturday . by Federal Judge J. Stanley Webster. The Government closed its case by Making four charges. These included tße accusation that Mullan city coun ellmen "licensed" liquor dealers and Vice resorts: that they declared a motive" for this action, saying the city treasury needed the money: • that the city and county officers warned rum sellers of Federal raids and that they threatened persons who interfered with the working of the "license sys tem." Witnesses for the Government testi fied that the city officials acted on the preaumption that the community did not want prohibition and that it ap proved the licensing of liquor establish ments, gambling places and disorderly houses as a means of raising revenue. The prosecution conceded that no one personally profited from the "license fees'* and that all the revenue was used for municipal expenses. —■ - I Daring Sailor Rescues Crew. OPORTO. Portugal, December 23 (API. Plunging into rough seas at Letxoes, the port of Oporto, yesterday a sailor twam with a line to the sinking trawler, Santa Maria, and was credited with sating the lives of 12 men on board. The vessel ran onto the ricks, and was sinking rapidly 300 feet offshore when the men were rescued. They and more than 500 other guests had lunch eon on the ship. ' DISTINGUISHED IOWAN IS FATALLY STRICKEN Wilbur W. Marsh, Wilson Cam paigner and National Committee man, Found in Automobile. I Br the Associated Press. WATERLOO, lowa, December 22 Wilbur W. Marsh, Democratic national committeeman from lowa during the campaigns of Woodrow Wilson, died at his home here last night. Death was caused by a paralytic stroke. He was found unconscious at the wheel of his automobile on a highway near Hudson this morning. Physicians said Mr. Marsh had apparently been unconscious in the car all night. Before losing consciousness he had stopped the car and shut oil the motor. Mr. Marsh was prominently men tioned for appointment as Secretary of Agriculture during the second Wilson admlnLstration. He recently retired from the presidency of the Associated Manufacturers Co., a farm implement concern. Por a time he was treasurer of the Democratic national committee. He is survived by the widow and a daughter. Mrs. Bennett Clark, wife of the son of the late Champ Clark. HERO DIES IN POVERTY. CHICAGO, December 23 </P).— Out in Union Park. Chicago, there stands a great statue, erected as an outward sym bol of the city's debt of gratitude to Patrick Nash and the rest of the men who were acclaimed heroes for suppress ing the Haymarket riot of 1886. But Nash no longer can view it and recall the events that resulted in its ereetlon. He was found dead Saturday—alone in the squalor of an attic room on West Madison street.
