14 ARMENIAN HORDE, PROBLEM IN GREECE Welfare Group Un dertakes Part of Burden es Caring for Refugees. ID the shadow of the Acropolis of Athens is a settlement of 35,000 Ar menian refugees, the last of the horde driven Into Greece seven years ago fol lowing the Bmyrna disaster. The major portion of that vast army, numbering several hundred thousand, has gradually been absorbed, evacuated or drifted pack to Its former life In Asia Minor, Put the remaining 35,000 homeless men. women and children, still constitutes a problem for over-crowded Greece. They •re living in the crude huts and hovels beneath the famous citadel and are en tirely dependent on welfare agencies. The Catholic Near East Welfare Asso ciation, at the direction of Pope Plus XI, has undertaken a part of the bur den of caring for this refugee colony and a housing program for them is now Wider way. What is far more serious, however, ft is explained, is the problem of car tog for the children of the colony, par ticularly orphaned boys, and checking their habit of begging in the streets of Athens, a step to thieving and banditry. To check this tendency the association has opened a second orphanage in the ©tty, which is crowded to its capacity of nearly 400. Many of the erstwhile little beggars are now learning trades to make them sell supporting. This is "Enlistment Week” in the Catholic Near East Welfare Association pi support of its widespread work of re construction and rehabilitation In the Near East and Balkan countries. Or. Edmund A. Walsh. S. J.. vice president of Georgetown University, is president of the organization. Included on the board of directors are Cardinals O'Con nell Dougherty and Hayes. The associa- The Hecht Co.
