LOS ANGEES GAINS
IN CENSUS TOTAL
Now Among Five Leading
U. S. Cities —Reports From
Population Centers Vary.

Lob Angeles, which was tenth In size
among the metropolises in 1920 with
676.673 persons, is expected to climb into
place among the five leading cities in
the 1930 census. Which of the five the
West Coast city is to dislodge has be
come a matter of conjecture among
those watching the census returns, with
indications being that Detroit, in fourth
place, will give way.
Cleveland, fifth in 1920, reported yes
terday a gain of 12.6 per cent for the
10-year period to bring her from 796,-
841 to 897,458. Detroit had 993,678 in j
1920 and both that city and Loa An
geles are hoping to pass the million
mark in this count.
New York and Chicago are, of course,
certain of first and second places re
spectively. Philadelphia, with a popu
lation of 1,823,779 10 years ago, will
remain third, in all probability.
New Haven Backs Position.
New Haven, Conn., coming in today
as nearest static of any city of more
than 150,000 thus far reporting, barely
held her lead on Hartford. New
Haven's population was 162,650 in 1930,
as against 162,537 in 1920. Hartford’s
was 161,32-* in 1930, as against 138,036
in 1920, a gain of 16.8 per cent.
New Haven was passed Youngstown,
Ohio; Orand Rapids, Mich.; Dayton.
Ohio; Memphis, Tenn., and Dallas and
Houston, Tex.
Wilmington, Del., with 104,941, joined
Lowell, Mass., in a fall to the foot of
the 100,000 list. . A
Minneapolis reported a 21.5 per cent
Increase to a 1930 population of
462,611.
Municipal "Twins" Listed.
The most sizeable set of twins thus
far reporting in the 1930 census are
Waukeegan, 111., and Mansfield, Ohio,
each with a population of 33,434.
Other close rivals on the 25,000 list
are Enid, okla., 26,331, and Eau Claire,
Wis., 26,337; Bangor, Me., 28,701, and
Galesburg, HI., 28,702; Revere, Mass.,
37,705, and Cumberland, Md., 37,713;
North Bergen, N. J.. 40,641, and Lynch
burg, Va., 40,643; Columbia, S. C., 49,-
617. and Aurora, 111., 49,522; Dearborn,
Mich., 50,060; Pueblo, Colo., 50,068;
Highland Park, Mich., 52,817, and Waco,
Tex., 52,825.

Acid
Many people, two hour* after eating,
suffer indigestion as they call it. It is
usually excess acid. Correct it with
an alkali. The best way, the quick,
harmless and efficient way, is Phillips’
Milk of Magnesia. It has remained
for 50 years the standard with phy
sicians. One spoonful in water neu
tralises many times its volume in
stomach acids, and at once. The
symptoms disappear in five minutes.
You will never use crude methods
when you know this better method.
And you will never suffer from excess
acid when you prove out this easy
relief. Please do that—for your own
sake—now.
