B-4 MOMENTOUS ERRORS. —By BURTIS 4tO»REAMRJA*!© ONE\ r " _^= ”~~~*““ r " ' ' I ESCORT : " HOW .. - V.». ~ MOVIES AND MOVIE PEOPLE | BY MOLLIE MERRICK. HOLLYWOOD, August 9 (N.A.N.A.). —Fifty composers took train Thursday, seeking the granite canyons of New York and a more fertile field for their musical endeavors than the gelatin col ony has turned out to be. The exodus is merely the reversal of a picture of a year ago, when each in coming train brought its quota of song writers* routine directors and lyric com posers to the colony. Broadway these davs is evidently a better place along which to peddle a tune. The men Who make movies have turned their backs on the incidental song, moved doubt less to a large extent bv the hilarious and persistent kidding which the theme song idea received on every’ side. Don't think the studios are without musical staffs. The men who will re main here are those who understand score, libretti and the working out of the light opera theme to its most tri umphant conclusion. The Rombergs, Hammerstelns, Oscar Strausses and others of similar caliber are still needed in talking pictures. It is the inci dental song which is banned completely and the musical output which is cut down to a minimum as compared to the rate it was going this time last year. William Le Baron s significant state ment that "musical compositions have no place in a screen play unless justi fied by the plot" would seem to have sounded the tocsin of warning to the tuneful Tommies who packed up and made away with the easily earned profits of the past 12 months safely tucked away in their jeans, one hopes. On the heels of this development comes George Bernard Shaw's oracular: “Theaters may survive in places where people are taught to act, but apart from that there will be nothing but talkies." During the last three months there has been increased attention paid to legitimate drama, comedy and the au thors of both these branches of theatrical art. If producers pave held off from Shakespearean presentations, so have theatrical producers of late years. The form of speech of this; classic has become outmoded, and it would be exceptionally difficult for talking screen presentation. 1 Daily Cross-Word Puzzle ,?“7“ 5“ “3“9™ J I?" “ IT” “ , n. An almost entirely professional audi ence applauded Ann Harding's work , vociferously, and the entire cast and . director came in for the unstinted i, praise of their confreres. | This is the second professional tri , umph this year. The picture making . group rose to a man to acclaim “All i Quiet on the Western Front.’’ 1 To Russell Gleason goes credit for the . moat pertinent remark about "Holiday’’: ’ "Any picture which can make you feel J sorry for rich people, and genuinely i sorry, is great.” Which is an explanation and a crit icism and an approval in briefest form. Mrs. Patrick Campbell is still Mala -1 proping it at local parties. Her latest frank statement came to Ray Griffiths, who, as all the world knows, has not been able to speak above a hoarse whis per since the war, due to gas bomb complications. Striding up to Griffiths, the veteran English actress remarked in an effi cient tone: "Young man, you owe it to yourself in this enlightened age to do something for that voice. It is not only hard on you but exceedingly hard on those who have to listen to you. Correct this miserable defect at once.” Griffiths, who tried to explain, was downed by a flood of oratory. Over come by his sense of humor, he retired to a oorner of the room to enjoy his laugh thoroughly. Down the salon came in the most rotund Campbellian tones: “That young man la either a fool or a bit of a r-r-rogue!” (Copyrlsht, 1930, by North American News paper Alliance ) Red, white and blue figures are In the national color scheme of Great Britain, France, Chile, Costa Rica, the Nether ! lands, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, as ' well as the United States. 48.
