HOLLYWOOD, August 9 (N.A.N.A.).
—Fifty composers took train Thursday,
seeking the granite canyons of New
York and a more fertile field for their
musical endeavors than the gelatin col
ony has turned out to be.
The exodus is merely the reversal of
a picture of a year ago, when each in
coming train brought its quota of song
writers* routine directors and lyric com
posers to the colony. Broadway these
davs is evidently a better place along
which to peddle a tune. The men Who
make movies have turned their backs
on the incidental song, moved doubt
less to a large extent bv the hilarious
and persistent kidding which the theme
song idea received on every’ side.
Don't think the studios are without
musical staffs. The men who will re
main here are those who understand
score, libretti and the working out of
the light opera theme to its most tri
umphant conclusion. The Rombergs,
Hammerstelns, Oscar Strausses and
others of similar caliber are still needed
in talking pictures. It is the inci
dental song which is banned completely
and the musical output which is cut
down to a minimum as compared to the
rate it was going this time last year.
William Le Baron s significant state
ment that "musical compositions have
no place in a screen play unless justi
fied by the plot" would seem to have
sounded the tocsin of warning to the
tuneful Tommies who packed up and
made away with the easily earned
profits of the past 12 months safely
tucked away in their jeans, one hopes.
On the heels of this development
comes George Bernard Shaw's oracular:
“Theaters may survive in places where
people are taught to act, but apart
from that there will be nothing but
talkies."
During the last three months there
has been increased attention paid to
legitimate drama, comedy and the au
thors of both these branches of
theatrical art. If producers pave held
off from Shakespearean presentations,
so have theatrical producers of late
years. The form of speech of this;
classic has become outmoded, and it
would be exceptionally difficult for
talking screen presentation. 1

true fulfillment.

frank statement came to Ray Griffiths,
who, as all the world knows, has not
been able to speak above a hoarse whis

English actress remarked in an effi
