A spike of Nevada ! silver, sledged Into a railroad tie by Secretary of the Interior Ray Lyman Wilbur, istarted the first numerous con- j •traction steps yesterday. Secretary Wilbur said to the assem bled representatives of six Colorado River Basin States: "I have the honor to name this dam After a great engineer, who really •tarted this greatest project of all time -—the Hoover Dam.” The spike-driving ceremony marked the start of construction of the 3J-mile I Union Pacific branch line, which will run from Boulder Junction to the dam (Wte. . | Actual work on the dam proper will hot start for a year. Dr. El wood Mead, head of the Recla mation Bureau, who will supervise con- | •traction, was taken ill just before the ; ceremony. Representatives of California, Nevada Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and New j Mexico, the six basin States which j signed a compact allocating water and power, were present. There was no offl- j rial representative from Arizona, the! •eventh State of'the Colorado Basin. Arizona is preparing to-file suit in the United States Supreme Court to halt the project.
