C„ THTTRSPAV. SEPTEMBER 18, TWO. GIGANTIC DETROIT DISTILLERY RAIDED Operators of Million-Dollar Plant Escape Police by Rope Ladders. Bt thf Associated Press. DETROIT, September 18.—Police early today announced they had de stroyed an illicit distillery which had been doing a II ,000,000-a-month busi ness for several months. In a raid late last, night they dis covered and seised the largest alcohol plant found in Detroit since the eight eenth amendment went into effect, The raiders said the value of the elaborate equipment and materials was $1,000,- 000, while conservative estimates placed it at more than 1560,000. Operators of the plant escaped by means of rope ladders from rear win dows, while the police were battering down doors and partitions. The build ing. located near the center of the up town business district at Woodward ave nue and Grand Boulevard, formerly was used by the Fire Department, but was abandoned and sold several years ago. The big distillery was equipped with s telephone system and a battery of elevators. There was evidence that it was operated by experts. Each vat was furnished with a bulletin board, giving the formula used and instructions as to temperatures and time of heating There was a well designed ventilating system for carrying fumes to the roof. ' Holes in the upper floors, through which firefighter# formerly passed, had been- converted into elevator shafts. Behind Every Change There’s a Reason THE law of cause and effect dictates that “behind every change, there’s a reason.” And there’s a reason behind Electrolux, the Gas Refrigerator. More Electrolux, Gas Refrigerators, were sold in Washington during the past month of August than ever before. And more are constantly being sold. People are changing to gas refrigeration, and there’s a reason for that, too. The reason is that “Domestic refrigeration belongs to the gas industry.” Simplicity of design gives Elec trolux “natural advantages” which more people are realizing every day. HERE ARE SOME OF THEM. ■—Electrolux is noiseless . —Electrolux has no moving parts . —Electrolux is cheaper to operate than any other automatic refrig erator, —Electrolux can never wear out be cause a tiny gas flame and a trickle of water do all the work . When you buy a refrigerator you should think in terms of years of satisfaction to come. When you get an Electrolux Gas Refrigerator that is just what you are buying. You will never have to pay for ser vice because there are no moving parts to wear out and because the Washington Gas Light Company l gives free service on all appliances. Ten dollars down and the balance in 18 months will give you automatic gas refrigeration. If you are thinking of buying a refrigerator, you should see Electrolux before deciding. Connor, In Main Ad dress, Asks Fighters to Be lieve in Justice of Cause. Special Dispatch to The Star. BHARPBBURG, Md., September 18.— Standing on ground hallowed by men of the North and South who died in the battle of Antletam, Maj. Gen. William D. Connor, commandant of the Army War College, at Washington, yesterday | delivered the principal address during exercises held In connection with the I anniversary of that major Civil War engagement. Brothers fought, brothers at Antie tam, Gen. Connor said, because each J was imbued with the "Arm belief” that j the government# and the people# to whom they owed their allegiance had earned their loyalty. Addressing Gov. Albert C. Ritchie and a large audience, he urged that all citizens resolve "that i ! your sons shall ever have an undisputed right to believe to their dying breath in the honesty, the fairness and the | justice of their Nation's aims and poli cies.” Urges Belief In Righteousness. Gen. Connor acknowledged that the world Is "tired of war.” "But in the past,” he said, "you have called upon your sons to vindicate justice, and should justice again be imperiled you will again call upon them to make a similar sacrifice. “You must not shrink from the j ! thought of future fields as fiercely fought as this and as stubbornly con tested.” he asserted. “It is your duty ; to Insure that the men who must fight | upon those battlefields shall be no less imbued with the belief in the righteous ness of their cause than were those who fought at Antletam.” Emphasising that responsibility for governmental policies at home and abroad rests with the citizens, who stand behind the leaders to whom they dele gate power, the War College head assert i ed that it Is the duty of the citizens to j make sure that "those who, in the days ! to come, will fight the battle# of your children, or your children's children, will fight as only men can, or will, who know that they are fighting for the right.” Far tors for Peace Stated. The only way for citizens to escape their responsibility, he said, la for them to abdicate their fundamental rights. "Justice and honesty in our policies will make for peace and harmony at home and abroad,” he declared. "Injustice or dishonesty In our poli cies will induce war. And It is only a fixed belief in the justice and honesty of our policies that will engender such loyalty and devotion in the hearts of the men who must defend them as il lustrate the story of this great battle field.” Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Buckley of Enniscorthy, Ireland, recently celebrated their seventy-seventh wedding anniver sary.
