■ MRS. BEERY BACK, DENYING MYSTERY Trip to Nevada Made to Es tablish Home, Says Wife of Movie Actor. B* the Associated Press. LOS ANGELES. September 18.—Mrs. Marguerite Beery, reported missing by j her husband, Noah Beery, fllm actor, i was at the home of friends In Holly- , wood today, where she said there was I no mystery attached to her absence i from their North Hollywood ranch. She said she had b«en in Las Vegas. Nev., to "establish a residence." Soon after her return she Issued the follow ing statement: • I was much surprised upon my re turn to read I had mysteriously disap peared. There Is no mystery to my absence. I went to Las Vegas to es tablish a residence. I may return there to make It a permanent residence. “Will you ascertain what reward Mr. Beery offered for information as to my whereabouts? If sufficiently large, I will have myself brought In Imme diately. Denies Having Money. "Newspapers reported Mr. Beery said I I had *750 on my person at the time I disappeared. May I add that during my married life with Mr. Beery of 20 years I have never seen *750." Beery had said he learned Mrs. Beery j had received her monthly Income from the *250.000 trust fund which he es tablished for her some time ago. Beery reported to police Monday his wife had disappeared September 8 with out explanation, and asked aid In locat ing her. He said she had been ill and he feared harm had befallen her. After his wife had been located, Beery •sked the authorities to continue their | Investigation of her disappearance, de daring "I want the proper authorities ! to investigate this matter and prosecute •ny one guilty of enticing or luring Mrs. ! Beerv from her home. If it can be i established any person or persons are | responsible for her strange absence I shall lodge charges against them.” Beerv said he had learned his wife 1 had left Las Vegas yesterday and driven •cross the desert to Los Angeles alone. Guests Nearly Week. Court records here revealed Raymond Wells sued Beery several months ago for *50,000 damages for alleged assault. Wells asserted Beery knocked him down and injured his skull. Beery made a denial, and the case never was pressed. The understanding is it was settled out of court.. Two years ago Mrs. Beery started di vorce proceedings, but dropped them. She and Beery were married at. Boston |in 1910. and have one son, Noah ! Beery, 3d. I ■ I DRINK FATAL TO SEVEN Alcohol-Milk Mixture Blamed foor Seaman's Colony Tragedy. NEW YORK, September 18 (>P>. — “White Smoke,” a mixture of dena tured alcohol and milk, caused the death of seven men in the “Tin Moun tains." a colony of tin shacks in Brook lyn, chemical analysis of the mixture Indicated yesterday. Three of the men were dead when found Saturday. The others died in hospitals. The tin shacks are used by seamen. Police said the men had purchased a quart of painter's alcohol for 35 cents and mixed it with boiled milk. OIL COMPANY FIGHTS OKLAHOMA PRORATION Federal Court Asked to Pass on Whole System of Limitation of Production. By the Associated Press. OKLAHOMA CITY. September 18.— A Federal Court has been asked to decide the status of State limitation of oil production. The Champlin Refining Co. of Enid, Okla. in a suit filed yesterday asked an interlocutory injunction against the I State Corporation Commission's prora- ! tion of the company's production of oil in the Oklahoma City and Seminole Fields. The suit attacks the whole scheme of proration although it refers spe cifically to the last three orders of the ( commission holding production of Okla- I homa oil to 555,000 barrels a day.
