There are more than 40,000,000 dally iubscrlbers to newspapers In the United States, according to figures compiled by Miss F. W. Vought, librarian of the Federal Office of Education, Interior Department. Next in order. Miss Vought's report showed, are magazine readers, totaling 30,000,000. Miss Vought said more than 235,000,000 books are published annually in the United States, and that 25,000.000 persons borrowed books from libraries. Public interest in reading has been stimulated by inexpensive books sold through chain stores, by volumes of fered at cut-rate pricer and by stand ard works sold for $1 a copy. Os the total number of books pro duced in 1929—the year for which the latest total production is available— nearly 80,200.000 were text books for school use. Os the remainder, 45,880,- 000 were fiction, more than 2,700,000 ■were biographies and more than 36,- 885,000 were juvenile. History accounts for nearly 4.000,000 volumes, drama and poetry 4.000,000 and fine arts ap proximately 1,100,000. More than 17,600,000 books on reli gion and theology were published, 2,- 300,000 on science and technology and over 1,000.000 on sociology and eco nomics. Agriculture, law, medicine, travel and a miscellaneous grdtip totaled more than 33,000,000.
