B-12 , MANY ARE MISSING IN TYPHOON AREA Known Death List of Thirty Expected to Increase in Japanese Storm. By the Associated Press. TOKIO, October 14.—Thirty tfere known dead and many were missing today following one of the worst typhoons in years. Renorts that 200 persons were missing In the town of Oga, Miye Prefecture, could not be confirmed. Torrential rains, accompanied by high winds, swept Western and Central Japan yesterday, leaving floods and devastation In their wake In many dis tricts. In the Tokio-Yokohama district a slight earthquake occurred at the height of the storm, adding to the anxiety of the populace. Considerable damage was done to shipping and property along the cogstal regions and the inland sea. The great est damage, however, was done along the Choshi River, in Miye Prefecture. The river rose 20 feet in a few hours, overflowed its banks and flooded the town of Oga. Numerous rescue parties were search ing for refugees in the river districts of Yamaguchi Prefecture, where sev eral hundred houses were washed away. Bridges and roads were washed away in Osaka, Yokohama and other large centers. Thousands of houses in low lying districts were flooded. ROOSEVELT IS GUEST AT GEORGIA BARBECUE New York Governor Declares Occasion Is No Time for Political Discussions. By the Associated Press. WARM SPRINGS, Ga.. October 14. Georgians, including some of the State’s outstanding political figures, gave Gov. Roosevelt of New York a rousing “home coming’’ at a barbecue here yesterday. Some 2.000 or more from Georgia and other Southern States attended. Mr. Roosevelt had requested that the affair be non-political. Buttons and banners proclaimed Roose velt -for - President sentiment, and the Atlanta Firemen’s Band had a new march, “Forward, Franklin D. Roose velt. Senator W. J. Harris of Georgia told * newspaper men after the barbecue that he had just returned from a trip through New England "and foiind there as much enthusiasm for Roosevelt as there is in the South. There is no question,” Mr. Harris said, “of his popularity with the rank and file of the voters. Not only is this true in New England and in the South, but throughout the country. He has reunited the Democratic party like no other man could.” Mr. Roosevelt, in a brief speech at the barbecue, said "this is no time for poli tics. It is just a friendly party of neighbors.” AIR ATTACK SQUADRON FOR CAPITAL IS URGED Army Air Reserve Officers Discuss Plan for Base\t Bolling Field ■ Jr' and More Flying Time. Organization of an attack squadron, to be based and trained at Bolling Field, was begun last night at a meet ing of Army Air Corps Reserve officers of the National Capital area in Reserve headquarters, Walker-Johnson Building. Capt. Richard H. Ballard. Army Air Corps, air officer for the 3d Corps Area, with headquarters at Baltimore, was in charge of the meeting, which was the first of a series of Winter conferences for officers of the Air Reserve. Efforts will be made to obtain from the War Department for the next fiscal year an increase in flying time for the squadron sufficient to permit adequate training of the officer members who hold pilots’ ratings. The squadron also plans to ask for the assignment of an air officer to take charge of Reserve activities in the National Capital, un der directon of Capt. Ballard, who is in charge of Air Reserve work for the corps area.
