COTTON VALUES RISE TO NEW HIGH MARKS i Decrease in Offerings From South j Tend to Strengthen Whole Market. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK. October 24—Rallies from an early decline In cotton today carried prices into new high ground for the current movement, but prices broke in the late trading under week end U'jMdatien and a little more Southern selling. January closed at 6.96, with a fffteral market closing barely steady at net declines of 2 to 7 points. ! • The opening was barely steady 3to 7 1 1 points lower under overnight selling or -11 ders from the South which appeared to ‘ be coupled with considerable realizing , i and probably some local selling on pros pects for improving weather in the , Southwest and in expectation of in ’ i creased hedging. December declined to 6.84 and March to 7.09 under the I earlv pressure, but the trade was a . buyer and there seemed to be consider able week end covering. Southern offerings tapered off during the middle of the morning, and for a i time the market showed considerable ■ strength encouraged by steadiness in ’ the stock market, with December ad vancing to 6.95 and March to 7.21 or about 4 to 8 points net higher on the active positions. Demand then seemed to taper off. while a little more hedging made it? appearance in the late trad ing, as well as a renewal of week end realizing or liquidation. Closing quota tions showed reactions of about 10 points from the high level of the morn ing and were within a point or two of the early low levels. Reports from Washington that the Department of Agriculture would ac cept cotton warehouse rfeeipts on the basis of 8 cents per pound as collateral for seed loan falling due on October 31 and November 31. came in for some comment during the morning and may have helped to steady prices during the earlier trading.
