The room, following the age-old tra dition. was hung with service flags, and behind the box of the chief of naval operations and the major gen eral commandant of the Marine Corps were the flags of those officers. The Navy Band Orchestra and a section of the Marine Band Orchestra played for the dancing and the floor from 10 o'clock until some time after the mid night supper was well filled with dancers, enjoying the excellent music and the floor. The Vice President. Mr. Curtis, with ! his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and j Mrs. Edward Everett Gann, arrived shortly before 10 o’clock and were es corted to their box by Admiral William V. Pratt and Rear Admiral Henry Var num Butler, commandant of the Navy Yard. They were received by Mrs. Charles Francis Adams, wife of the Sec retary of the Navy; Mrs. William V. Pratt, wife of the chief of Naval Oper ations and chairman of the ball: Mrs. Ben H. Fuller, wife of the commandant, of the Marine Corps, and Mrs. Henry i Varnum Butler, wife of the command- ] ant of the Navy Yard. Mrs. Adams was in a gown of green | silk falling full to the floor, the bodice i having an embroidery of rhinestones. 1 She wore slippers to match and long | white gloves. Mrs. Pratt wore a gown of rose color crepe, fashioned on the never lines, slippers of the same and long white gloves. Mrs. Fuller chose a deep green satin gown, which fitted her figure and flared toward the bottom of the skirt, and her gloves were white. Mrs. Butler was In black, the gown hav ing a square neckline and long skirt I with which she wore black slippers and black gloves. The Secretary of the Navy and Mrs j Adams arrived early, the latter taking her place at the head of the receiving line, while the Secretary, escorted by Admiral Butler, went to their box. Mrs. Adams stood for some time with her cloak, a pale violet velvet wrap with a deep collar of sable fur about her, the room being kept cool for the comfort of the dancers. Many handsome eve ning coats and capes were in evidence during the early hours of the ball, par ticularly in the boxes and in the row of seats about the room. The Vice President had with him in his box, in addition to Mr. and Mrs. Gann, his son-in-law and daughter, Col. Charles P. George, U. S. A„ and Mrs. George; Mrs. Alvin T. Hert and ( f her niece.
