Dublin, one's mind naturally reverts to Dean Jonathan Swift, for it was while that famous author and churchman was in charge of this deanery from 1713 to 1742 that many of his famous satires were written. The building is cruciform. 300 by 07 feet, with a transept 157 feet wide. In the thirteenth century a church was erected on this site and St. Patrick is presumed to have been responsible. It suffered fiom fire and water, being flooded many times by the subter ranean river Poddle. In 1370, after being destroyed by fire, it was restored by Archbishop Minot. In 1585 Sir John Pirrot proposed to disendow' it and use it for a university and law school. This plan was thwarted by Archbishop Lof tus and the cathedral was saved. The building suffered from deteriora tion as time passed, and in 1860 Sir Bingham Lee Gunness proposed that it be restored and improved. For four years the work continued, until $800, REV. Among the most notable points of St. Patrick’s is a fourteenth century | tower and steeple, 221 feet in height. ! The flying buttresses are something | rare in Ireland and the beauty of the ! oarrillon in the belfry is famous. This j contains a chiming clock and a peal of 10 bells. Within the church are many tablets and monuments. There is a stone pul | pit, the gift of Dean Pakenham, and : one can stiil view the old pulpit which Dean Swift occupied and where he ; preached many of his famous sermons. It was while he was occupied with this charge that Dean Swift formed his association with Stella and Vanessa, the two romances of his life which re main mysteries of literature. It is in teresting to note that when he left his charge it was because of failing senses and that, three years later, tie died a lunatic. Oddly enough, he* left money to found a lunatic asylum and this was done shortly before his attack. Within the cathedral are busts and tablets of Swift, a tablet to Hester Johnson (Stella) and to Carolan, the last of the Irish bards.
