613 JUNIOR PUPILS Seven Schools Hold Midyear Graduating Exercises for Classes. Beven junior high schools graduated 613 students in midyear commencement exercises held today and last night. The schools and the number of diplo mas granted bv each were Langley, 340; Shaw, 98; Stuart. 94. Garnet-Pat terson. 80; Powell, 52; Randall. 52, and Paul. 97. A note of pride in their school marked the graduation last night of Langley Junior High School's class, which in leaving that institution for higher en deavors presented to the school a show case, In which will be displayed samples of work done by Langley pupils. George A. Harrison, treasurer of the graduat ing class, presented funds for the pur chase of the case to Chester W. Holmes, principal, on behalf of the class. The commencement was opened with the invocation by Rev. G. G. Kuhndahl, minister of the Neelsville Presbyterian Church. James M. Coutts, president of the class, then welcomed the audience of parents and friends, after which Helen Davis delivered the valedictory. Paul ine Slavin and Iverna M. Furey. two of the graduates, sang a duet, Schu bert's “Serenade.” The address was made by Dr. Harold E. Warner, prin cipal of the Hine Junior High School. Genevieve L. Adams, secretary of the class, read the graduating class records, and Ignatius L. Jacono, vice president, read the class honors. Miss Rose Lees Hardy, assistant superintendent of schools, presented the diplomas to the graduates The program also included songs bv the entire class and selections by the Langley Junior High School Or chestra. Exercises at Shaw. Dr. Eva Dykes, professor of English at Howard University, was the speaker at the Shaw Junior High School exer cises this afternoon, at which Dr. J. Hayden Johnson, member of the Board of Education, was the presiding officer. Frances E. Datcher delivered the vale dictory. Garnet C Wilkinson, first as sistant superintendent, spoke briefly. The "mantle oration" was delivered by Mary Stone. The graduating class sang several selections, and the exer cises were completed by the benedic tion by Rev. A A Birch. Dr. Johnson presented the diplomas. Harry O Hine. secretary of the Board of Education, presided over the Stuart commencement this afternoon, at which Rev. c. S. Abbott, pastor of the Church of the Good Shepherd gave the open ing and closing prayers. Bruce Davis, graduating class president, welcomed the audience. The Stuart Junior High School Orchestra presented the musical program, which also included a piano solo by Josephine Bertolini. Mr. Hine addressed the graduates and awarded the diplomas. Miss Flaxie Pinkett. honor senior of the Dunbar High School, was the speaker at the Garnet-Patterson Junior High School commencement this after noon. Rev. F. I A. Bennett, member of the Board of Education, was the pre siding officer, and in that capacity he presented the diplomas to the gradu ates. The musical program was pre sented bv the members of the graduat ing class. The graduation will be fol lowed later this afternoon by the pre?- j entation of a one-act play, which the students themselves conducted. Crane Presents Diplomas. Jere J. Crane, first assistant super intendent of school', was the presiding j officer ana the speaker at the gradua tion at the Powell Junior High School this afternoon. Rev. W. A. Roberts opened the exercises with an invoca tion after which Dorcthv Ratner de livered the address of welcome. Juan ita Claxon presented the valedictory. The graduating class sang several se lections. including ‘'Washington.'’ the composition of Dr E. N. C. Barnes, director of music of the public schools. L. T. Walter, principal of the school, presented the graduating class to the audience, and then Mr. Crane con ferred upon its members their diplo mas. The school orchestra completed the program. Student orations were a feature of the Randall Junior High School com mencement this morning. Under the title “Student Thoughts." four of the graduates presented their view's of mu tual responsibilities. Myrtle Queen spoke on “What the Home Owes the Child,” Florence Golden spoke cn “What the Child Owes the Home." Charles Fleming discussed "What the School Owes the Child," and Dorlis Johnson talked on "What the Child Owes the School.” Dean Lucy Stowe of Howard University addressed the graduates. Marjorie Luckett, one of the graduates, sang a solo, and Vir ginia Humes, Louise Stewart and Virgil Carter played a six-hand piano com position. Mr. Wilkinson also spoke briefly, and Mrs. McNeill presented the diplomas to the graduates. Pour members of the Paul Junior High School graduating class spoke briefly at their commencement this aft ernoon on "George Washington: An Inspiration for Youth.” Betty Bain discussed the patriot as a “good home maker,” Mary Heine as a “good neigh bor," Lemuel Fraser as a "good citi zen,” and Ruth MacMillan spoke on “Washington the Man.” Richard W.vche presented his class’ gift to his school and it was accepted bv L. J. Cantrell, principal. Stephen E. Kra mer, first assistant superintendent of schools, addressed the graduates and presented the diplomas. The invoca tion and the benediction was intoned by Rev.
