BYRON DIES AT HAGERSTOWN Manufacturer Was Classmate and Close Friend of Gen. Ferahing. Wounded in China. Special Dispatch to The Star. HAGERSTOWN, Md., February 5.— Col. Joseph C. Byron, 71, prominent | manufacturer of Hagerstown, died to I day at his home here. He became ill about 10 days ago. Col. Byron was a classmate and close friend at West Point of Gen. Pershing. During the World War he was a mem ber of the War Industries Board, being j head of the leather purchasing section, and was stationed in Washington. He served during the Philippine and Boxer uprisings and was wounded in the latter. He was head of the Byron Tanneries j at Williamsport, Md., and Mercersburg, Pa., and also owned and operated two large shoe manufacturing plants at Hagerstown. Besides his widow, he is survived by four children, MaJ. Joseph W. Byron, | State Senator William D. Byron, David | Byron and Miss Elfie Byron. O’NEIL RITES TOMORROW Georgetown Real Estate Man Leaves Mother and Brother. Funeral services for Frank A. O'Neil, Georgetown real estate man, who died Wednesday after a long illness, will be held tomorrow morning at Holy Trinity Church. O'Neil, who lived at 4402 Conduit road, is survived by his mother, Mrs. Ellen O'Neil, and a brother, William J. O'Neil, a laundry proprietor. Smart, a native of this city, who died in Tuscon, Ariz., last week, will be buried in Arlington Na tional Cemetery tomorrow morning. Funeral services will be held at the home of her mother, Mrs. Julia Higgs, 1659 Rosedale street northeast, at 8:30 o'clock, followed by mass at 9 o’clock at Holy Name Church. Mrs. Smart had been employed in the Bureau of Navigation, Navy Depart ment, since before the war. She had been at Tucson about three years. She was a charter member of Jacob Jones Post, American Legion, and had been active in that post until she left for the Western city. She was a yeomanette in the Navy during the war. Members of the post, co-woikers from the Bureau of Navigation and others [ban to attend the services tomorrow.
