COLUMBIA, 8. C„ February 23.— ! One of America’s best known woman j authors has temporarily abandoned her j pen lor the stage. For the last two weeks Julia Peter kin, creator of the Pulitzer prize-win ning “Scarlet Sister Mary,” has been rehearsing the lines of Ibsen's “Hedda Gabler” on an average of about 10 hours a day. The play is to be presented by the Columbia Stage Society, a local Little Theater group, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the town theater here. Mrs. Peterkin has the title role. Work Is “Fascinating.” Abandoning her plantation. Lang Syne, some 40 miles east of Columbia she has thrown herself wholeheartedly into her woTk. She is finding it “very fascinating.” since it brings to her an almost new ex perience. At the same time, she will be glad to return to the plantation on the banks of the lazy Congaree River. For one thing, her husband has three new hounds she hasn't seen. And she hears her son William re- j cently has been bringing down three birds each time he flushes a covey, and that must be looked into. But in the meantime, she is enjoying herself mightily. “It is hard work, but I want the play to be good.” she said. "When I think of the people who are coming to see me, some of them from as far as New York, I am almost frightened.” Has Moments of Misgiving. There have been some moments of misgiving. One of these came when she saw posters a student artist de signed to place outside the town theater. There is a sketch of her, and the nose “Is like this,” she said, as she cupped her hand to augment the size of the feature. “But I decided not to protest. I have such a good disposition it's a curse.” Her director, Belford Forrest, said she is an apt pupil. He has never, he said, seen a cast willing to work so hard as the one he has assembled for "Hedda Gabler.” $30,000 GEMS STOLEN FROM DEBUTANTE’S CAR Mysterious Theft From Sister-in Law of New York Broker Puzzles Police. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK. February 23.—The Dally News aays Jewels valued at $30, 000 were stolen last week under mys terious circumstances from Mrs. Robert T. Stone, wife of the head of R. T. Stone & Co., brokers. The story asserts the gems were taken in some unexplained manner from the automobile in which Mrs. Stone’s de butante sister. Miss Edith McCoon, was bringing them to New York from Greenwich, Conn. Miss McCoon is quoted as saying she put the jewels in a black bag, which was by her side as she drove to town. “The black bag was there at my side as I drove,” she is quoted as saying. "Then, when I reached my sister's home, I looked down and it had gone. 1 don’t understand It at all.” TODAY'S AMUSEMENTS. Tex., February 23 — Immi gration authorities at Washington have been asked to permit the readmittance to this country of Sergei M. Eisenstein, Russian film director. Eisenstein and two Russian assistants were stopped at the Mexican border by American immigration officials here. The officials declined to reveal why Eisenstein was halted. However, Hunter s, Kimbrough, his manager, said here the Russian's return journey to Hollywood was interrupted because there was at present no quota visa in Nuevo Laredo, across the Rio Grande from Laredo. Eisenstein and his party had been in Mexico 14 months making a picture. Kimbrough said they wanted to return to this country to cut and synchronize the film. The film director and his companions remained- at Nuevo Laredo pending action on the appeal. Kimbrough stated he recently ob tained visas from the American con sulate at Mexico City for the party's re-entry into the United States. He said Eisenstein was In good standing with both the Mexican and American governments. Dispatches from Mexico City said the Russian and three members of his motion picture troupe were investigated in December, 1930. on charges of being Communist propagandists, but were cleared.I gag ran Stc A 90 OHO SK US for the kind of Blank Books you needs.
