A STRANGE, strained moment when the lighted hall, the polished banister and its spindle shaped shadows went dancing into oblivion. Only that erect figure in evening dress, that lean dark face with the penetrating eyes, left in a mad world. Keith took a step toward her, he was about to speak. . . . Joyce suddenly became aware of her thin negligee, of the mass of dark red hair hanging about her shoulders. Be came aware, too, of a sudden humiliat ing trembling in her legs. In a sort of weak panic she fumbled for the door knob—stepped back into the room behind her. Jim Keith . . . Jim Keith here, in Riverton . . . Unbelievable! A strange tumult of feeling sweeping over her. Amasement, panic, a sweet wild gladness. . . . Joyce sprang to her feet—walked acroes the room and looked at the wide eyed girl in the glass of the old-fash ioned mirror. White, glad face—eyes black with excitement. Jim Keith looked back at her from the stairs . . . Oh, it was impassible . . . But the im possible had happened! Reason growing out of that first sweeping surprise—reason and angry dismay. This was no coincidence . . . life did head held high ... no one would guess at the secret leap of her heart when she saw Jim Keith alttlng here reading a newspaper as she entered. The breakfast room was a pleasant sunny apartment with long Trench win dows opening out onto the veranda. Mrs. Cameron had hung yellow scrim curtains, and cushions covered with white and yellow and creamy blue cre tonne were scattered about cm the reed furniture. Sun sparkled on the glass and silver of a breakfast table, which Joyce saw, to her annoyance, had been set for two. She was dismayed to feel a little flush rising to her cheeks, but her voice was cool as she greeted Jim. “A surprise to find you here, Mr. Keith ...” Joyce was blandly ignoring that startled moment In the hall last night. "1 leave you sailing out of Shanghai and find you in Riverton! I never knew such coincidences hap pened-” "They don’t!” Jim Keith’s teeth flashed in his lean dark face. ‘‘Unless we make them happen!” We make them happen...the words rang In Joyce's ears. So, he was here with a purpose. Natalie's letters . . . not hold such coincidences. How did Jim happen to be here In Riverton—in the Cameron house? Natalie's house guest ... Of course . . . That Natalie's guest should be Jim Keith! Well, why not? A cold, sharp voice In her brain was asking. Joyce’s mind flew- back to that long ago night on the Neptune when she and kitty had visited Keith in the first officer’s quarters. A vision of his desk in the lamplight . . . The scattered sheets of Natalie's letter . . the snapshot of Natalie and Jim. . . . Of course ... all these years Jim had been corresponding with Natalie. They must be very friendly for him to be visiting her here in her own home ... Well, why not! Joyce asked herself furiously. What was it to her who Jim Keith visited! Whom he wrote to ... ! If only she could erase the memory of that mad night in the bow of the Nep tune. If only she could blot from her mind the sound of her own fervent voice. ... . Thank God—oh, thank God, he didn’t know how she had hidden on the dock at Shanghai and watched him sail away into the sunset. ... Well, she would be coldly polite— Joyce told herself proudly He would see that night cn the Neptune as a mad. detached moment. . . . While Joyce ate the dinner which the maid brought to her on a tray she had the girl make up the bed with fresh linen. Later she dismissed her, and Jovce sat alone by the open window, chin resting on her hand, somber eyea fastened on the lights of the town below. _ _. This suite, which had been Roger's, faced the side of the house, giving no view of the entrance or of that aweep of graveled driveway, where long ago a girl' had hidden in the shrubs and wist fully watched a garden party. The murmur of voices coming to her as she sat in the growing darkness. Natalie s guests arriving. Ragged strains of music—bringing a picture of the crowded front rooms, of the lantern-lit porch. Bringing a picture of a flaxen haired girl dancing in Jim Keith's arms. . . . Loneliness crept like a chill over Joyce. She was only 25, but she felt as old and as sad as the world. A strange life—full of unexpected turnings . . . Was she never to find happiness along the road? Why had Roger Insisted that she return to this town they had both disliked? And why should ghosts come out or the past to trouble her heart . . . tall ghosts with mocking dark eyes. . , . Nothing of this in the cool-eyed girl who entered the breakfast room the next morning. Nothing to tell that she had a slight moment of panic as he stood in the old brown suite a few minutes ago. "This is absurd!’’ Joyce said proudly to herself. “This is not my prison— this is my home! I am the mistress here-’’ As a knight might choose his armor for a tilt, so she had chosen a dress which was designed to vanquish Mrs. Cameron—a white crepe affair, the very simplicity of which stamped It as Pari sian and expensive. Sweet and cool and proud—coppery Loneliness crept like a chill over Joyce —only 25, but she felt as old as the world. Natalie had kept corresponding with this good-lcoking man she had casually met on shipboard . . . Plainly. Natalie was interested in him to have him hare as her guest! •'I've left the Neptune.” the man waa saying. "I'm going In for breeding thor oughbred horses. Another fellow and mvself have a ranch out West. . . .” Doubts—lifting their heads like snakes. Jim Keith had been writing to Natalie all these years ... He was here, visiting Natalie—Natalie with her comfortable, small fortune. Not the Cameron money, to be sure—but a tidy sum for an adventurer. Joyce remembered the "old scandal” about this man. The whisper of mys tery which followed him. A handsome man—easy success with women...Look at that mad moonlit night when he had swept her from her feet. . . . Hot wretchedness burning her heart. She hated him—this strangely disturb ing man with the mocking dark eyes... She felt he had sensed the antagonism in her manner. That his spirit had withdrawn to a safe distance and was waiting, coolly watchful, as a clever swordsman would watch. They were poised at a tension, distrusting each other—strangely attracted. . . . All Joyce's poise went to appearing coolly serene. She answered Jim s ques LEGAL NOTICES. WILLIAM W. BRIDE and WALTER L. FOWLER. Attarneyi. IN THE SUPREME COURT OP THE Dis trict of Columbia. Yet when her hand chanced to touch his as she handed him a cup of ooflee, she started as though the contact had been red hot, and for a startled moment dark eyes clung to vio let ones In a strange unsmiling scrutiny. Natalis entered before the end of the meal. Natalie In pale blue, and looking —with her flaxen hair and light eyes— a trifle anaemic baslde Joyce's strange, vivid beauty. Natalie spoke with stiff politeness this morning and her words were courteous enough, but there vu cold jealously in the pale blue eyes as they rested on the other girl. (Tomorrow—Norma Again.)
