The climax to Tarzan's amazing experiences came
a few days after he found himself in chains. Pass
ing down a corridor upon which his prison chamber
faced, he saw a file of Veltorismakusian warriors.
They were as large as himself and each was mounted
upon a huge antelope. In contour and markings the
animals were obviously the royal antelope, which is
the smallest known. The ape-man ran his brown
fingers through his hair and gave up attempting
to solve the enigma.

His wounds healed quickly, as did those of the
warriors confined with him. On the seventh day
six armed Veltorismakusians came for him. His
chain was removed, and he was ordered to follow
them. His captors had ceased to talk to him. be
lieving him ignorant of their language. From their
conversations among themselves, however, the ape
man discovered that he was being taken before their
king. Elkomoelhago, who had expressed a desire to
see this remarkable captive when he had recovered
from his wounds.
The Ions corridor through which they were proceed
ing was partially lighted by the same amarlng
smokeless candles that previously had aroused Tar
zan’s curiosity. Slaves and warriors moved In two
continuous and opposing lines through this corridor
and every one that crossed it. There were high
caste s’e.vrs in white tunics, green-tunicked slaves
of the second generation: warriors of every rank and
position, all mingled with the jeweled-studded har
ness of the rich.

And passing all these, often at high speed, were
other warriors mounted upon what seemed to Tar
zan mighty antelopes. These were to him still the
greatest wonder of all. At intervals along the cor
ridor he saw ladders extending to a floor above. As
he never saw one descending to a lower level he
concluded he was on the lowest floor of the struc
ture. He was certain this building was similar to
the dome he had seen in the course of construction
