RECENT GAIN WELL
Some Irregularity Crops Out,
but Many Gains Are
Recorded.
BY F. H. RICHARDSON,
Special Dispatch to The Star.
NEW YORK, June 6.—Considering
the amount of advance in individual
bonds and in the bond market average,
the action of the list today was surpris
ingly good.
While there were losses in bonds that
had advanced from 10 to nearly 20
points at the end of last week, other
issues gained 3 to 6 points in adjusting
their quotations to what had already
taken place in similar obligations.
Trading was active and the interest
In the market in all directions broader
than it has been in months.
The most important advances were
once more in the railroad group. They
Included such early gains as 7 points
In New York Central debenture 6s,
which afterward lost part of their ad
vance. and nearly 4 points in the de
benture 4s of this road; 21-. points in
Great Northern 4'2s and in Baltimore
& Ohio 4Vis, over 5 points in Baltimore
& Ohio 6s, and 6'2 points in the South
western division 5s of this system; a
point in Erie refunding 5s, Great North
ern general 5s and Chicago & North
western 6’js, and 2 points in Western
Maryland 5’is.
Great Northern 7s, which rose over
8 points on Saturday, were off some
what on profit taking, which was to be
expected of a bond that had advanced
22 points in three days. There were
also declines in Union Pacific 4s. Atchi
son General 4s, Northern Pacific 6s,
Southern Pacific 4>2s and in the Frisco
<5r Rock Island junior mortgages. Chi
cago Great Western 4s declined 3 points
after gaining over 8 points on Satur
day. Obviously the rapid advance in
many railroad bonds had corrected the
dangerous conditions that surrounded
them and made further support of them
unnecessary.
In the junior issues of the public
utilities the strongest were those of
American Water Works. North Ameri
can Edison. Utilities Power & Light,
International Telephone & Telegraph
and Hudson & Manhattan. On the
other hand. Brooklyn - Manhattan
Transit 6s had a severe decline in
sympathy with the action of the stocks
of this company. American & Foreign
Power 5s lost 1'2 points, reflecting the
Interests of this corporation in Chile.
The establishment of a Socialist gov
ernment in Chile caused a break of 5
points in Chile Copper debenture 5s and
carried the various defaulted Chilean
government loans down to about their
previous low levels. None of the other
South American bonds, however, were
affected. The strength of the German
group, and particularly the non-gov
emment loans, was significant.
The announcement of Treasury* finan
lng in the amount of $750,000,000. com
posed of one issue of three-year 3 per
cent notes and another of one-year l>-2
per cent certificates, had little effect on
the outstanding Government loans. In
view of the premium that has fol
lowed all Treasury financing recently,
It is expected that the new offerings
will be well oversubscribed. The two
year 3s brought out in April are now
efuoted at a premium of nearly 2 points
and are selling on less than a 2 per
cent yield basis.
New Bond Financing.
NEW YORK. June 6 (/P>.—State and
municipal bond financing scheduled for
this week totals $12,210,423, as com
pared with $32,800,741 during the past
week, according to the Daily Bond
Buyer. The weekly average of new of
ferings for the year to date is $22,599,
154.

Grain Market
By the Associated Press
CHICAGO, June 6.—Despite late es
timates that Europe had bought 5,000,
000 bushels of North American wheat
today, every kind of grain lurched
heavily downward.
8top-loss selling in wheat here was
witnessed early and late, and some
grains plunged below any level since
1897. The main Immediate Influence
appeared to be unrestrained liquidation
of farm holdings of wheat In Canada,
where the Canadian government bonus
of 5 cents a bushel on wheat expires
June 15.
Wheat closed Aervous. U^-21; cents
under Saturday's finish; corn
down, oats s* -1 % off, and provisions
unchanged to a setback of 5 cents.

CANADIANS CUTTING
PRODUCTION COSTS
Two Kailway Linei Furnish Strik
ing Examples of Lower
Operating Expenses.
Special Dispatch to The Star.
TORONTO. June 6.—In taking stock
of her position at the beginning of the
Summer season, Canada finds her chief
cause for encouragement in the lower
cost of production in many Industries.
One of the meet striking adjustments
is that revealed by the net earnings of
the Dominion’s two transcontinental
railway lines. In spite of a decline In
car loadings, which averaged more than
13 per cent for the first four months
of the current year as compared with
the figures for the corresponding third
of 1931. the Canadian National Rail
ways reduced Its operating expenses In
this period by *10.826,053 to *45.615.364.
Gross revenues for the four months
ended with April amounted to *46.064.
388. a decline of *11.370.381. Conse
quently. net revenue, without any de
ductions for bond interest, amounted for
the fpur months to *449.023. as com
pared with *993,362 for the same period
of last year.
In April alone, when the operating
ratio on these Government-owned lines
was reduced to 91 per cent, the excess
of revenue over working expenses
amounted to *1.067.970. an increase of
*173.080 over the net revenue for April
of last year.

Public Utilities Make Best
Showing—Changes in
Narrow Range,
BY JOHN A- CRONE.
Special Dispatch to The Star.
NEW YORK, June 6.—An Irregular
opening on the Curb Exchange today
was followed by a slight downward
drift oY prices. The lowered quotation*,
however, failed to bring out any In
crease in offerings.
Electric Bond & Share at midday was
at 7 4. off 4. Standard Oil of Indiana
at 17-4 was off 14 points. American
Gas & Electric declined almost a point.
Consolidated Gas of Baltimore eased
about 34. Cities Service at 24 was up
4 point.
There was litlle in the way of week
end news that could be classed as dis
tinctly unfavorable, but the market met
some early profit taking induced by the
three successive rising sessions of last
week. Bickford’s reported May sales
down 12 per cent. Ford reported May
output of cars and trucks at 72,140
units and announced June production
would reach 112.160 units.
European cables indicated that Ford
plants in Belgium, Spain, Germany,
Turkey and Japan will be in production
within a week and that before the'
month end assembly branches in Ar
1 gentina and Brazil will be in operation.
Nevertheless this news was not at once
I reflected on the tape in any of the
various Ford Issues.
The oil industry is the first major
trade to show signs of reaching a profit
able basis, yet the petroleum shares,
after weeks of relative steadiness and
even firmness, were off slightly today.
This was true during the early after
noon of such issues as Humble Oil,
Standard Oil of Kentucky and Inter
national Petroleum, though Gulf Oil
pointed upwards.
Public utilities made the best display
of strength during the forenoon. As
sociated Gcs & Electric certificates
were up 44. Duke Power was up about
half that amount. Electric Bond St
Share 6 per cent preferred opened up
a point.
Interstate Power of Delaware pre
ferred rose about 2 points, though Na
tional Power & Light preferred lost al
most that much after its brisk recovery
in the final minutes of Saturday’s ses
sion. Standard Power & Light pre
ferred was strong.
American Cities Power & Light A
held steady around 17 4 as the com
pany reported net assets on Mav 31
equaled $72.15 per share on that stock.
Midvale Co. (of Delaware i sold at 104
after its last previous sale early in April
at 264. Saturday the tape printed a
number of bids and offers on this stock,
but no transactions in it.
Newmont Mining was the strongest
of the active copper shares. Hudson
Bay Mining and United Verde Exten
sion were steady. Roan Antelope, cables
from South Africa reported, treated
86.000 tons of ore in May. averaging
3.85 per cent copper, the smelter output
being 1.972 long tons of blister copper
assaying 99.59 per cent copper.
