STOCKS IRREGULAR AT SHdRT SESSION - mT * ' '" - Profit-Taking in Final Trad ing Wipes Out Early Advance. BY CLAUDE A. JAGGER. Associated Press Financial Editor. NEW YORK, June 11.—After a few more prods at the retreating bear In terest In the stock market, speculators for the rise began to lighten their com mitments In advance of the week end today, and a brisk upswing In the first hour was more than lost. Auburn pushed up 9 points, on top of the advance of about 30 points In the last two days, then slipped back. Numerous advances of 1 to 3 points registered in the first hour were lost' and the market closed a point or so j under yesterday’s final levels. The j closing tone was slightly heavy. The , turnover was around 800,000 shares. The appearance of reports in brok erage circles that steel operations will slacken further next week, probably to a new' low for the year, apparently put a damper on early bullish enthusiasm. Aggregate operations in the Youngs town area alone, however, were expected to show slight improvement next week. Nevertheless, the presence of the bonus army in Washington has led to definite uneasiness, although there is no expectation that the $2,000,000,000 j bonus bill will be enacted. American Tobacco ‘‘B" and Case con verted early gains of 2 points into net losses of like extent. Allied Chemical and American Telephone advanced about 3 points, then reacted to close fractionally under yesterday's final levels. U. S. Steel and New York Cen tral closed unchanged, after advancing more than a point. Eastman and Santa Fe converted gains of 1'3 into losses of 1 point. American Can finished off after registering a temporary gain of 2 Coca Cola finished more than a point higher, after advancing more than 3. Norfolk & Western closed up 21/2, net, after selling somewhat higher. Auburn at the top was at 76. in contrast to its recent low of 28^4. It closed un changed at 6634. Recapitalization Plan. NEW YORK. June 11 dP\.—'The re capitalization plan of the Kelly-Spring fleld Tire Co. drew close today to the majority support needed by stockholders in order to declare it operative. The Reorganization Committee stated that j more than two-thirds of the company’s outstanding 6 per cent and 8 per cent preferred stocks have now been de posited. The deposits of common stock j nave passed the 60 per cent level. I Sugar Price Gains Are First Upward Swing This Year Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, June 11.—The first Im portant upward movement In raw sugar this year took place within the last five days. Although the gains approximated only one-tenth of a cent per pound, the advance, viewed from a percentage basis, was fair. The price of refined sugar during the week dropped to 3.70 cents a pound, the lowest price recorded In this mar ket since April 18, 191*, when 3.87 >2 cents, the record low, was reached. This refined sugar reduction was due to the competition from imported refined sugar in this territory. In view of the ad vance in raw sugar, however, a rise In Teflned early next week is considered probable. The cash price of granu lated sugar in the primary markets here had steadily held at 3.75 cents a pound for more than a month until Thursday's reduction. A year ago cash wholesale prices in the grocery district here were 4.45 cents a pound. (Copyright. 1»33 1 STEEL PRODUCTION DECREASES FURTHER Seasonal Decline in Orders Besults in Curtailment at Mills. Copper Prices Pirn. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK. June 11.—As demand for steel products tapered off in the past week, a corresponding drop in ingot production developed with the rate estimated at 20 per cent of ca pacity. Seasonal decline In orders was re flected by a drop to the smallest total of unfilled tonnage at the end of May by the United States Steel Corpora tion. Orders for automobile sheets from one manufacturer were sustained and structural awards for public projects increased, but otherwise quiet condi tions prevailed. Mills are said to have abandoned the prospective advance In prices for the third quarter and scrap prices have weakened. Demand for pig Iron remained dull at barely steady prices. May production was the lowest since 1897. Copper held steady, with sellers ask ing to 54 cents for electrolytic de livered in the Connecticut Valley. Un certainties over the final effect of thp 4-cent domestic import duty on the metal In the world markets had a re stricting effect on trading and possi bilities of a British import duty on metal produced outside the British Empire were being discussed. Unset tlement of economic conditions in Cen tral Europe restricted trade there. District Business Barometers Gains In power consumption and telephone use In the District were regis tered last month as compared with May of 1931, but declines occurred In check transactions, postal receipts and retail trade, according to business barometers collected by The Star. Power consumption in the District amounted to 27,785 989 kilowatt hours, as compared with 25,558,407 for May of last year. During the past month there were 182,306 telephones in service, as compared with 172,474 at the close of May. 1931. The average number of originating telephone calls last month was 743,318, as compared with 703.682 in May, 1931. Bank clearings in Washington last month amounted to S80.493.495, which was a decline from May of last year, when the total was $102,346,949. Postal receipts here last month amounted to $416,676.42, as compared With $4534095.62 for May of last year. Retail trade here last month, as meas ured by reports of eight department stores, showed a decline of 12.8 per cent from the level of May, 1931. The loss for the first five months was 1*2 percent.
