LONDON.—While the popularity of jazz music in Scotland and the ambi tion of so many young Scots to learn how to play jazz band instruments are looked upon as reasons for the slump in the bagpipe businesa and the decline in the number of persons who want to be pipers, “canned" music in England is blamed for parlous conditions in the violin-making trade and the unemploy ment of hundreds of musicians. Several well known violin-making firms in London, including one with a history of 150 years, have now shut down. An official of the latter concern asserts that "tinned” music competition is too severe. When wireless broad casting was first introduced in this country, it was contended In some quarters that it would stimulate more persons to become proficient pianists and violinists. But the outlook for bud ding gonitises is so uncertain today that many parents are not encouraging their children to toy with the violin. The decline in the sale of sheet music is said to denote that this is now be coming a nation of listeners.
