ARCHITECTS IL START OF REVIVAL $572,738,000 Projects Al ready Financed and Being Planned. Belief that the beginning of a period of recovery in the building industry of the country has been reached Is held by editors of the American Archi tect on the basis of a survey of projects now planned and financed. Based on direct individual reports from 1.636 representative architects and other informed sources, the sur vey shows that building and mod ernization projects now in the plan ning stage and already financed amount to S572.738.000. Contemplated construction, based on architects* records and checked against business conditions in each State, reaches an additional figure of $1,181, 068,000, the magazine reports. Construction Speeded. Of the total of the two classifica tions. those already planned and those contemplated, it is reported that $293. 623,000 is in the new building projects already financed and under planning for immediate construction. In the actual new building projects there «ire 1.145 dwellings costing below $20.000, making a total estimated cost of S10,171,500. and 203 dwellings cost ing from $20.000 and up, costing a total of $8.104.000. Of apartment buildings and hotels there are 128, representing a cost cf $18,155.500, and 24 hotels costing $4.490,000. In the contemplated construction listed in the survey data there are 3.429 dwellings having an individual cost below S20.000 which have a total estimated cost of $25.822.100, and 582 dwellings of more expensive classifica tion having a total cost of $21,677,500. Three Factors Listed. There are 573 contemplated apart ments and apartment hotels that will cost $136,150,000 and 130 hotels that ■will cost $43.923.000. The survey and forecast by Ameri can Architect lists three factors which are believed to be serving to stimulate recovery of building. They are: •'Normal requirements, which have not been satisfied for several years, will j call for a considerable volume of prod ucts to bring the buildings of the coun try back to proper condition. "Available Federal funds promise to turn vast sums of money for the pur chase of building materials. "The people know that from an eco nomical point of view now. when costs ι of labor and prices of building prod- j ucts are unusually low. is a good time to build or modernize." Asks Permit for Home. Prank C. Hudson, owner, has ap plied for permit from the District for the erection of a two-story brick dwell ing at 3031 W street southeast, having β η estimated construction cost of $7,000. J. A. Absher is the builder. New Suburban Home in Kenwood Completed ; 1 Residence on Woodlawn avenue at the intersection of Shadow road, Kenwood, Md., which has been acquired by Richard C. Hubbard. It was built by H. H. Hubbard Irom plans by A. H. Sonnemann of the Kennedy-Chamberlin Development Co. —Star Staff Photo. [ The residence of Richard C. Hub- I bard, on Wood lawn avenue, at the in tersection of Shadow road, in Kenwood, Md„ Is an interesting study of a modern home that reveals the architectural in fluence of the early American manner. There is seen in this house appealing effect of the low. somewhat rambling and broken roof line of a dwelUng that is set snugly against the ground. It is given an added picturesque feeling, due to its location on a spacious and wood ed lot, showing a broad expanse of sloping lawn in front of the building. Roof Is of Tile. The house is a combination of stone, white-painted brick and clapboard, and has a roof of tile of the type employed in the restoration of historic buildings at WiUiamsburg, Va., which gives the effect of old, moss-green, wood shingles of the early American homes. The white-painted brickwork aerves to lighten the aspect of the house and to provide contrast against the gray and light-brown tones of the stone and the green of the lawns and trees. An ornamental wrought-iron porch, •with copper roof, lends a distinctive touch to the entrance. » Hearth of Marble. The main entrance leads into a spa cious hall, from which a stairway of early American style carries to the second floor. Through a deep arch at the left of the entrance hall and down two steps is a large living room, in one end of which is a fireplace having a facing and hearth of marble and a wood man tel extending to the ceiling. To the left of the fireplace is a deep-seated window in a paneled wall area, while a door in the paneling to the right of the fireplace leads to a sun room having a flagstone floor. The sun room has east, south and west Exposures. To the east of the sun room and adjacent to it is a paved terrace and lily pond. To the east of tlie living room and up two steps is a library, which Is pan eled in knotty white pine, finished in a rich nut-brown tone. The room has built-in bookcases, which line the wall. A long covered porch, with flagstone flooring, is reached from the living room through French doors. To the right of the main entrance is the dining room, which is featured by paneled wainscoat and built-in china closets. It has a window which gives a picture of a sunken rose garden on the property. A two-car built-in garage completes the first-floor plan. On the second floor are four large bed rooms, dressing room and three baths. Over the garage is a maid's room, with bath. These quarters can be reached by stairs from either first or second floors. The house was built for the owner by H. H. Hubbard, contractor, from plans by Α. Η. Sonnemann, architect, ■ associated with the Kennedy-Chamber- | lin Development Co., which started the Kenwood section several years ago. 15 East Underwood St. CHEVY CHASE, MD.
