83 IN FIRST CUSS TO FINISH ELIOT lew Junior High's Program! Includes Orations by ! Graduates. The Eliot Junior High School held fto first commencement yesterday afternoon when it graduated a class of 83 boys and girls. This school's in augural graduation exercises were pre sided over by Mildred Katz, the class president. The program was marked by an ad dress on Charles W. Eliot, the man for whom the school was named more than • year ago, by Claude Dellinger. The student's addre«s was an expression of appreciation to the character and life to whom the school Is dedicated. Other orations by members of the graduating class included "Some Les sons in Stones," by Dorothy Sansbury and George Dorsey; "Building a Structure of Stones," by Doris Oliveri; "The Builders," Longfellow's work, re cited by Stella Kaisell; "Launching Forth," by Mary Craig and Marion Koemer, and "The First Crop," by Mildred Katz. The class was presented by Mrs. Agnes I. Kinnear, principal of the school, to Jere J. Crane, school system business manager, who in turn pre sented the diplomas. The program was opened with the invocation by Rev. Cllfiord H. Jope and included songs by the girls' double quartet, whose members were Joyce Tull. AJda Rab bitt. "GIFT FROM HOOVER" IS REPORTED LOST By the Associated Pres». WILMINGTON, N. C., January 31.— As Capt. C. C. Halllday of the rum attip Tanner prepared yesterday to take his ship from the Cape Fear River to morrow, he revealed that "an expensive pair of binoculars presented to me by President Hoover for heroism off the North Carolina coast" was missing from his efTecU. Halllday was captured off Cape Hat terns January 20 when Coast Guards men seized the Tanner with 849 cases of liquor aboard. Later the ship was released from custody under a Supreme Court ruling. He said the missing glasses were pre sented to him by a representative of President Hoover several months after he saved seven seamen and a woman from a disabled schooner in 1928. Hal llday said the craft had become un seaworthy in a storm and that he was chief officer of the British passenger ahlp Mayaro at the time.
