Bishop Freeman.
Confirmation of 24 candidates, pre
sented to Bishop James E. Freeman,
by Dr. C. Ernest Smith, rector of St.
Thomas' Episcopal Church, Eight
eenth, between P and Q streets, will
be held tomorrow at the 11 o'clock'
service. Bishop Freeman will preach j
the sermon.
There will be extra music sung by j
the choir of 35 voices. One of these 1
extra pieces will be an anthem com
posed by Cyprian Shanowsky of San
‘Francisco, Calif. This anthem is on 1
[the words. “Come unto me, all ye that
(labour," and will be sung at the be
Jginning of the service. It is dedicated ,
|to Franklin D Roosevelt, President of '
[the United States, and will be the
first time it has been sung.
Easter Tickets Necessary.
At this service no tickets will be
required, except for the reserved por
I'tion where the candidates and their
Immediate relatives will sit. On
Easter day, however, tickets will be
necessary both for pew holders and
lor strangers. This, in the first in
stance, to guarantee the pew holders
their own seats and in the second to
give others assurance of seats which
otherwise they might not obtain.
As usual in St. Thomas’, at confir- '
(mation services the men will wear
[ clothing suitable for the service, while
*the women and girls will wear veils!
and white dresses. Also in accordance
with the custom in St. Thomas’ the
vestments and the flowers will all be
red, in recognition of the fact that
prayers are offered for the gift of the
Holv Spirit, suggested by the tongues i
of fire falling on the apostles in the
Upper Room at Jerusalem. The full
acolyte body of the church will be in '
the procession, its two foremost mem
bers flanking the cross and bearing
candles.
Pastor to Mane Appeal.
At this service the rector will an
nounce the opening of a campaign
for funds to put the roof of the
church and Its heating plant in good
condition, in both cases of which there
Is urgent need. This campaign, how
ever, will not be conducted by a body
of workers, but by a simple personal
communication from the rector, with
the cordial approval and backing of
the vestry.
There will be shortened evensong
next Wednesday and Friday at 4:301
followed by address. On Wednesday
the address will be given by Rev. R.
J. Shores and on Friday by Dr.
Bishop, who is preaching a course of
sermons on "God's Messages Through
the Prophets ”
On Good Friday services will be at
9. 10. 12 to 3. and 4:30. At the 12-to
3 service, known as the Three-Hour
Service. Dr. John Rathbone Oliver,
distinguished priest, physician, psychi-1

ing services in the Baptist churches
of Washington tomorrow is the goal j
set by the Columbia Council of Baptist
Men for its annual “Men in Church” ;
day. In many of the churches the
ministers are expected to preach ser
mons particularly adapted for men.
In some of the churches laymen
have been Invited to assist the mini
sters in conducting the services.
Representative Russell Ellzey of J
Mississippi, teacher of a large class of
young men at First Baptist, will head
his group in attending the 11 o'clock
church service, while at Fifth Baptist
there are two large classes of men.

Dr. John McDowell, moderator of the
General Assembly. He has been for a
number of years one of the secretaries
of the Board of National Missions,
with headquarters in New York. Prior
to his election to that position he was
pastor of the Brown Memorial Church,
in Baltimore, for a considerable period.
Dr. McDowell will speak at a lunch
eon in the Y. W. C. A. at 12:30, to
which ministers and elders of the
Presbytery are invited. At 8 o’clock
there will be a public meeting in New
York Avenue Church under the au
spices of the Presbyterian Alliance, at
which Dr. John C. Palmer, its presi- j
dent, will preside. Other clergymen
participating will be Rev. D. H. Evans,
moderator of the Presbytery; Dr. J.
R. Sizoo and Dr. A J. McCartney.
Dr. McDowell will deliver an address
and at the conclusion an informal re
ception will be tendered him. The
