m ANNIVERSARY 10 BE OBSERVED Founding of Metropolitan A. M. E. Church in Special Program. The 96th anniversary of the found ing of Metropolitan A. M. E. Church will be observed with special exer-, cises beginning tomorrow and con tinuing through March 23. Dr. Charles H. Wesley of Howard University, superintendent of the Washington district, will preach the anniversary sermon tomorrow at 11 j a m. On Tuesday night, March 20. , the pew of the late Frederick Doug- J lass, who joined Metropolitan Church \ In 1893. under the ministry of the late Dr. John W. Beckett, will be1 dedicated. Jefferson S. Coage will preside and Armond W. Scott wdll deliver the address. Anniversary ex ercises wdll continue throughout the week. Mrs. Julia West Hamilton, whose membership covers a period of 50 years, is chairman of the Anni versary Committee. Dr. P. A. Scott of Campbell A. M. E. Church wdll preach on Monday night. Dr. E. C. Smith of the Metro politan Baptist Chuch will preach Wednesday night. On Thursday night a fashion review and musicale will be held. J’ridav night is members’ night for reminiscences and reunion. Church Organized. The Metropolitan African M. E Church was an outgrowth of the dis satisfaction which occurred in Eb enezer Methodist Church (white), on Fourth street near Virginia avenue southeast, about 1820. The separa tion of the colored members from this church first led to the organi zation of Israel African M. E. Church In 1821 by Rev. David Smith, a mem ber of the Baltimore Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Metropolitan Church was an outgrovdh of these two organiza tions. It was organized as a sepa rate congreeation In 1838. It was then known as Union Bethel Afri can M, E Church. Rev. James A. Hardy was the first pastor. By order of the General Conference in 1872., Union Bethel became Metropolitan African M. E. Church. When Rev. John Stevenson became pastor In 1880 the first steps were taken toward the erection of the present edifice, j The basement was opened for W’or- ; ship on November 8, 1885, and the > dedication ceremonies were conduct- | ed on May 30. 1886. Dr. T. G. Stew art was the first pastor who served In the new building. Dr. Stewart has been succeeded as pastor by the ; following ministers; Rev. John G. Mitchell. Rev. John T. Jenifer, Dr. John Albert Johnson, later bishop; Dr. D. J. Hill, Dr. O. J. W. Scott, later chaplain in the United States Army; Dr. John W. Welch. Dr. I N. Ross, later bishop; Dr. C. M. Tanner, I Dr. C. E. Stewart and Rev. William H. Thomas, the present pastor. PLAN LENTEN SERVICE Y. W. C. A. and Epiphany Church to Have Special Program. Under the auspices of the Y. W. C. A and the Church of the Epiphany an unusual Lenten service will be given at the church March 22, at 4:45 pm "The New Creation.” a festival of song and praise, was written to be used at the Y. W. C. A. convention at Detroit in 1930, and was repeated at the Minneapolis convention in 1932. The text Is particularly appropriate to the trends of the present time. The music will be given by the choir of the Epiphany and the Elizabeth Somers, Business and Professional Women’s ar.d Girl Reserve Glee Clubs of the Y. W. C. A. Adolph Torovsky will be at the organ.
