RIPLEY. , T WAS sitting in the stand next • • I to the major general, famil iarly and, believe it or not, * affectionately known as Hard Boiled Bullock. All the sol- ( diers knew that while he was ‘tough’ he was ‘fair,’” Prof. Fordney said to his class. “He had just taken over command oi a corps area and was review ing the Infantry for the first time. "The command ‘Attention!’ was given and those boys certainly snapped into it. When the com mand 'Forward. Half way down the col-1 umn I noticed a soldier stagger, then , fall forward. Those beside him i showed natural nervousness, but when I Bullock boomed ‘Attention!’ the whole line immediately became as statues. "I hastened to the fallen man and saw at a glance he was dead—unques tionably poisoned. The rigidity of the body and all other symptoms pointed unmistakably to it. But how had it been administered? "The general was down on his knees before I was,” continued the pro fessor, "and-” "And what did you do?” Interrupted Martin. “Why, I asked the troops be kept at attention while I summoned the med ical officer and the police." Fordney replied with a drollish look. "Baloney!” retorted Martin. "I know what’s wrong with that story.” The professor smiled. Martin was right. Do you know why? (For Solution See Page A-9.)
