TARZAN AND THE CITY OF GOLD.

“You refuse my love!” Nemone screamed. “You
spurn me? You dare spurn the love of a queen!
And. I knelt at your feet!” She sprang to one side
of the room where hung a metal gong. She struck
it thrice, and Its brazen notes rang through the
chamber.
Tarzan stood watching the queen In her raging
fury. She seemed wholly irresponsible—quite mad.
This Indeed was Nemone the destroyer, who killed
or disfigured women that dared be more beautiful
than she, who wantonly tortured men for her own
fiendish pleasure.
The lord of the Jungle knew it would be useless
to attempt to reason with the mad queen. He moved
slowly toward the door. Before he reached It, how
ever, It swung open. Immediately a score of strong,
fierce warriors, accompanied by two nobles, rushed
Into the room.
"Take this man! ” Nemone commanded. "Throw
him into the cell with the other enemies of the
queen.” Tarzan was unarmed. When he entered
the ivory room he had unbuckled his sword and
laid it upon a stand near the doorway. And now
20 spears encircled him!
