PENSIONS OFFERED BY PEOPLES DRUG New Program Underwritten by Equitable Life As surance Society. BY EDWARD C. STOXE. Employes of Peoples Drug Stores. • Inc., one of the leading durg store chains in the country, now have com plete insurance protection, following the adoption of a group pension plan, ■which has been underwritten and will be administered by the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States." Malcolm G. Gibbs, president of the retail drug organization, with head quarters here, stated that the pen sion. or retirement program is in ad dition to group life insurance, acci dent and health insurance, and ac cidental death and dismemberment insurance, which have been provided ior employes under earlier contracts with the Equitable. The total volume of group insurance and pensions in the organization is placed at approxi mately $13,000.000. All forms of pro tection are on the co-operative basis, with premiums shared by employer and employe. All employes with two years cr more of service on August 1, 1934. and who are between the ages of 30 and 65 years, are eligible to partici pate in the group pension plan. Each contributing employe will receive on retirement, normally at age 65, a monthly life income equal to 1 per cent of his monthly earnings as of August 1 for each year of service be fore that date, this income being provided entirely from payments by the corporation. He will also receive as income, from payments made by the corporation and himself, 11 - per cent of earnings multiplied by the number of years of service after August 1. Peoples Drug and subsidiary com panies operate 115 drug stores in eight States and the District of Co lumbia. Beginning with one stcre opened in Washington in 19C5 by President Gibbs, the organization has shown a steady growth through the years. The Equitable Life Assurance Society was represented in the trans action by J. Alan Maphis, group supervisor of the D. S. Betliune Agency here. Chain Store Earninss Jump. NEW YORK, November 9—The stock market pushed slowly but steadily forward today. Specialties were the principal gainers during the forenoon, but other parts of the list also strengthened in subsequent deal ings. The late tone was firm. Briggs Manufacturing, Santa Fe. Johns Manville, Douglas Aircraft and Co lumbian Carbon rose 1 to 2 points. - United States Steel and American Tel ephone improved fractionally. Trans fers approximated 860,000 shares. Th major grains got up around a cent a bushel. Cotton was a little bet ter than even as the trade discussed plans for further acreage curtailment next year. Bonds held their modest * gains of yesterday. The French franc and the gold currencies moved up against the dollar, but sterling turned heavy. ri.mc snarrs in ucnuno. United States Steel, American Telephone. General Motors, Chr;s!er, Montgomery Ward, United States Smelting and many others were narrow. Freight car loadings for the week ended November 3 showed a decline of 11,795 under the previous week, but this was much less than seasonal. Shipments of the United States Steel Corp. for October disclosed a drop of 26 344 tons under the previous month, which was about in line with early estimates. Activity in some of the aviation stocks was attributed to reports of ex pansion of construction by leading 1 companies and the attention attracted by new transport plane records. Sentiment Improves. While a somewhat more cheerful atmosphere seemed to dominate the board rooms, the lack of any broad public participation in equities trading tended to temper whatever enthusiasm may have been aroused by the mild inflationary interpretations placed on Tuesday's elections. Little surprise was expressed in the financial district over advices from Washington indicating that the ad ministration estimated the budget for the next fiscal year would total some $7.500.000.000. Wall Street was highly interested in word from the Capital that the Presi dent. instead of turning to the left as the result of the election verdict, might seek to revise his economic program along conservative lines. Intimations that the Chief Executive was against further currency inflation, and hoped that any additional monetary adjust ments would be based on stabilization through international agreements, were cheering to banking circles. Nervousness over the French politi cal situation apparently had worn off considerably, although most observers were still rather confused regarding the outlook for the new Flandm cabinet.
