Fine Array of Pictures For Thanksgiving Week Garbo Remains Another Week—Cagney's New est Effort at the Earle— Our Daily Bread " Arrives—Some Wires From Hollywood. BY E. do S. MELCHER. HOLLYWOOD never forgets—and it is always ready to lend a helping hand. If it is within their power to do so. the stars will crash through for you 100 per cent—well, anyway. 80 per cent. If a "benefit" is planned, no matter how far from the home plate, you can count on Hollywood being part and parcel of it—and if some member of the gang out there goes off on a trip, or comes back from a trip, you can expect a send-off or a welcome such as they must have had back in the happier -1 -r r»_i rn UflJO υι Evidence of "this spirit of good cheer end whatnot was received yesterday when from Hollywood came wires from Bob Montgomery, Madge Evans and Wililam Powell anent the opus that Bess Davis Schreiner and Mabel Van Dyke produced recently at Pierce Hall. Said Mr. Montgomery: "Best of luck." Said Miss Evans: "I hope the reception is as warm as the title sounds cold. Best wishes." Said Mr. Powell: "If its a Melcher production, its the best show in town, especially if there is a Powell production in town. Signed Bill." Such welcome remembrances make one fonder than ever of Hollywood, and make one realize that the stars always find time to do what they can to help the marching soldier—no mat ter how small or how distant he may be. * * * * ÇJUIDE to the new films (some of which seem to have opened al ready) : For instance, you'll find "Wagon Wheels" today (and tomorrow, etc.) j at the Metropolitan, as also that Star "thriller." "The Search for Santa Claus." which was made by Capt. F. E. Kleinschmidt, one of the smarter showmen in the business. "Wagon Wheels" features Randolph Scott. Gail Patrick and Monte Blue and so far as we know concerns wagon wheels. It's a Zane Grey story. Garbo remains at the Palace. And Why wouldn't she? Jimmie Cagney comes back to the Enrle tomorrow as "The St. Louis I Kid." He is supported by Patricia Ellis. Allen Jenkins and Dorothy Dare (who by the way was the girl in yes terday's picture—not Miss Ellis). Eddie Prabody, who can make a banjo sound like an orchestra, heads the stage show. King Vidor's long-awaited "Our Daily Bread" comes to the Columbia tomorrow, with popular Karen Morley as the leading player. This is the one about community farming which has b"en well received in many quarters. Tom Keen is in it. too. At Loew s Fox you'll find Anna Sten and Frederic March in "We Live Again"—not to be confused with "Today We Live" or "We Live Today." which is really "Ressurrection." Rotiben Mamoulian, who once went buggy riding with Garbo. diree'ed. Th° stage show is headed by Ferde Grofe and his orchestra. And at Keith's "Anne of Green Cables" is doing a landslide business. By the way. the "front" on that theater is worth a visit all by itself. Its the best any theater has had in a long, long time. * * * * "JJEAR SIR: "Just inside the marque of the Palace Theater this week are some fine photographs of scenes from Greta I Garbo s film. One of the scenes is ; laid in the locker room of a men's club where the polo players are talk ing together and evidently getting , ready to take their showers. George 1 Brent is shown partially disrobed, but j not unbecomingly or distastefully so. ; This scene seems to have been deleted j from the local showing of the film ; Wonder why? Was this scene clipped by the censors' scissors? If so, why is the photograph shown in the theater lobby?" So far as we know it wasn't the censor that snipped this but M-G-M when the film was done over a few weeks ago. In the meantime the ad vance "campaigne" on the film had begun and pictures of the film as it then was were released. The Palace, however, makes a mis take in tempting its patrons with "shots" that they won't see. * * * * Vl/ELLr—today Manager Angie Ratto was made a colonel—and how! He vas officially given his rank this morning by Col. Carter Barron at a function at the Variety Club that also honored George Jessel. ♦ ♦ * * Τ AST minute thanks: To Mary Foley Benson for that splendid painting of the great white open spaces of Maine in "44 Below"...to the Arthur de Tit tas for their very courteous wire... to the Columbia Players and Ted Tiller and the Mantilla Players for the same. . .to Dan Terrell for his swell suggestion, which we accept with pleasure. ..to all those other wires which, after this Turkey day, we'll really get around to answering... to Allen Stephens for building a grand set. . .and to the audience for coming. Somehow last night the good play ers managed to be even better than they were the night before—in spite of the fact that there didn't seem to be any room for improvement. We really felt sad last night when Flossie folded up her "shorts" and went home. · « STUDENTS IN PLAY. As their first production of the season, the students of the Studio of Theater Arts will present Sidney Howard's "The Silver Cord" Tuesday and Wednesday nights. December 11 and 12, at Wardman Park Theater. Constance Connor Brown, director of the studio, is directing the production. All roles in the play are undertaken by students. While "The Silver Cord" has only a cast of six persons, the majority of the students are engaged in the actual staging of the produc tion, costuming, properties, lighting, etc. The settings, designed by Miss Brown and by Frank Westbrook, assistant director, are being built in the studio by the students themselves. Mr. Westbrook supervises the construc tion. In New Screen Version of "Resurrection" "We Live Again," which is really Tolstoy's "Resurrection," features Frederic March and Ann Sten. They are shown above in one of the scenes from this new film, which opens tomorrow at Loew's Pox. ARAN ISLANDS TOPIC OF ADDRESS TO SOCIETY National Geographic Members to Hear Lecture by Robert Cush man Murphy Tomorrow.
