Federal Issues Lose
Part of Gains.
BY BERNARD S. O'HARA,
Associated Press Financial Writer.
NEW YORK, December 19—Weak
ness developed in numerous rail and
Utility loans in the late bond market
trading. United States Governments
receded from their early highs but
continued to rule slightly above the
previous finals.
Losses ranging up to 2 points oc
curred in loans of Alleghany Corp.,
American & Foreign Power, Consoli
dated Gas of New York, Columbia Gas
& Electric, International Telephone
and Phillips Petroleum.
A three-point break In German gov
ernment 7s featured the foreign list.

CHICAGO GRAIN
By the Associated Press.
CHICAGO. December 19—Holidayl
spirit pervaded the grain markets to
day and ordinary price-making stim
ulants fell flat, with quotations show
ing a general tendency to sag.
A new Government report scheduled
for issuance at 2 p.m. tomorrow had
some effect toward inducing hesitancy
as to fresh ventures on the part of
traders. Tomorrow's report from the
Government will show the first official
acreage and condition figures on new
domestic Winter wheat.
Wheat closed weak at the day's bot
tom level, under yesterday's
finish. May 9814-^, Corn si-~i down,
May 87-87oats %-l2 off, and pro
visions unchanged to a rise of 10
cents.

Reserve Members Disclose
$2,827,000,000 Increase
Since First of 1934.
BY CHAS. P. SHAEFFEB,
Associated Press Financial Writer.
An increase of $2,827,000,000 in de
posits of weekly reporting member
banks of the Federal Reserve System
since the first of the year is revealed in
the latest condition statement oi these
banks, issued by the Reserve Board.
Inasmuch as these institutions rep
resent approximately 45 per cent of the
deposits of all commercial banks of the
country, the net increase in deposits
of all banks should be in the neigh
borhood of $6,300,000,000 in the same
period, should the same ratio of gain
prevail.
The latest statement of reporting
member banks, which comprise in
stitutions in 91 leading cities, showed
total deposits of $18,130.000,000 as of
the close of business December 12,
compared with $15,303,000,000 last
January 3.
These figures, which are exclusive of
Government deposits, showed that net
demand climbed $2,837,000,000 in the
period, while time deposits were de
clining by $10,000,000.
Reserve Board officials believe the
majority of this increase has been due
to the heavy Government bond flota
tions during the same period which
has increased the public debt by more
than $4,500,000,000, bringing it to \
$28.387,000.t)00 as shown by the latest
Treasury statement.
The increase in deposits is not con- j
centrated in any one section of the
country, but is spread throughout the
Nation, the Reserve Board's statement
shows. In the table that follows the j
deposits of weekly reporting member
banks, by Federal Reserve districts,
are shown as of the close of business
January 3, and December 12, with the
change for the periods:
